JACKSON - Seelig Bartel "Bushie" Wise, 91, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. today at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson.
Mr. Wise, formerly of Jonestown, MS, had a long and distinguished career in public service. He attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army and graduated from the Chinese Language School at Berkley. He earned a BS degree in Agriculture from Mississippi State and was a cotton planter in Coahoma County. He served as a special agent in the FBI. He was the first post-Reconstruction Republican State Senator, representing Coahoma, Tunica and Quitman Counties. Mr. Wise also served on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield, was a co-founder of the Mississippi Hospital Association of Governing Boards, and served as president of the Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center Board of Directors.
He served as the State Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmer's Home Administration and also the Agricultural Stabilization and Soil Conservation Service.
Mr. Wise was a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson. He was married to the late Miriam Swann Wise and the late Melba Taylor Smith Wise.
Survivors include his son, Daniel Reese Wise, formerly of Hattiesburg, now of San Jose, Costa Rica; three grandchildren, Daniel Reese Wise, Jr. of Poplarville, Juliana Wise Kyzar of Murfreesboro, TN, and Wilson Bartell Wise of Pearl; one great-granddaughter, Savannah Danielle Wise; and seven nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Mississippi Baptist Children's Home.
