Utilizing a $300,000 grant through Delta Regional Authority, Coahoma County recently began an project aimed at studying a potential transportation system which would be able to connect a Mississippi River port with Canadian National railroad in Quitman County.

The project – largely consisting of   in-depth data analysis and mapping –    is being headed up by Jackson-based Waggoner Engineering and expected to take six months.

In addition to obtaining an updated inventory of existing infrastructure, Waggoner will study route locations for future rail and highway and examine the feasibility of constructing a port facility on the river.

A location in the vicinity of Friars Point has been identified for the potential port site and would connect with Canadian National’s main line near Sledge, Miss., according to the contract agreement with Waggoner.

County Administrator Daniel Vassel says the work is expected to provide local leaders with a much improved picture of the county’s overall transportation system and ability to bring in major industry.

“This will only enhance our industrial prospects in the county and arm economic development officials with information useful in the recruitment of more industry,” Vassel said.

Ron Hudson, executive director of the Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce, echoed Vassel’s sentiments, saying the work is aimed towards answering many questions which are currently up in the air.

“We are going to be looking at a  corridor linking the river with a class one rail system and determine what the cost would be,” Hudson said. “We really don’t know right now.”
