it just amazes me that such ignorance is embodied by a number of citizens in clarksdale. if people would quit trying to blame everybody else and take responsibility for their own actions, our town would be a much better place. It does not matter whether you are black, white, rich, or poor, everyone has the same opportunities to succeed and to choose a better life. Yes, some have to work harder than others but it can be done. I have no idea why everyone is out to blame everyone else for murders in Clarksdale. Parents need to grow up and be parents to young kids instead of instilling their bad habits on them and leading them to grow up not knowing that they can be any better. Encourage your children, let them know they can succeed. Show them love, attention, give them access to positive environments, and take an interest in what they are doing. If more people in Clarksdale would reach out to their own instead of pointing fingers at everyone else then less kids would grow up to be involved in the lifestyles that most of our young people in Clarksdale are choosing today. I realize that the choices a person makes are their own decisions and that nobody is to blame but themselves but I cant help but thinking if those people were guided in another direction and giving hope, maybe they would have grown up to make better decisions. I have lived in Clarksdale my whole life, and I love it. I never want to go anywhere else. I know a lot of people feel the same way i do too. Although, I alone cant make Clarksdale a place I want to raise my children. Neither can a handful of citizens who share the some love for clarksdale that I do. It HAS to be a TOWN effort, and as long as everyone is pointing fingers and constantly against each other it will never be accomplished. It is a sad thing to think about the town I love never being able to get back to what I have always heard it used to be. I just hope maybe one day it will.

tell an Espy machine supporter by two things, they never hold the Espy machine accountable for ANYTHING negative but are quick to give them credit for EVERYTHING positive. Interesting

To Proud Mother: You had to have grown up or lived in Eastgate during the 80s. The names you listed are very familiar and describe those women to perfection.

I sit here and I'm readin all the comments some I agree with and some I don't, we as parents and human beings forgot the most important things in life: EDUCATE/RESPECT others and ourselves wewant to blame others for our mistakes but never accept our OWN. my heart goes out to the Ross family, open your EYES and LIVE right, Our young men and women, each year carries a number! Its not the Mayor or Police fault its the" Citizens"

I agree with the commenter who talked about things to do in Clarksdale, the guy who wants to rebutt every post I write is coming across as purely antagonistic. He is offering no real solutions he's just tearing down what others are trying to build up. It's okay to be critical of leadership, That's our God Given Rights as American citizens we should always look over the shoulders of our elected officials to make sure they are doing what's best. But this Black vs. White and class warfare that this individual has brought into the discussion is exactly what I meant about the deep seeded hatred that SOME people in Clarksdale harbor from BOTH RACES. Then this guy has the audacity to basically say I have no right to speak about what's going on in the place I grew up or the matters that affect my family members there because I spoke the truth about a town that is spiraling out of control. Somehow if I had stayed in Clarksdale the Fortune 500 company I work for would've come to Clarksdale instead. You can't blame anybody for leaving to go to where the the oppurtunites are, and you can't act like oppurtunites are bountiful in our home town. Alot of the points you bring up make no sense at all.... Example you brought up Delta State not being in Clarksdale and made a direct correlation to the current leadership...You do know that DSU has been in Cleveland since 1924, you spoke about it like the people in Clarksdale today had a hand in blocking it. And another thing in the heck does "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" have to do with Clarksdale? You do know you brought up a theory about evolution that is known as the Big Lie right? Or did you think that sounded like something slick to say at the time?I too would like to hear your big ideas and how would it be financed, because apparently you don't even get the basic concept of earmarked funds that have to be used for their intended purposes.

Reply to ....."Things To Do In Cdale/Coa. Co., and Things Don't Do In C'dale", I find your reporting exceptional. I have been well informed by both of you, as it took some time and thought to record all of this information, analyzing if it's effective, efficient, available, etc. For me, the two of you should be the ones making a difference or are both of you thoroughly engaged in doing just that? I had to take a deep breath. You both can critically think, write, analyze, my God.......A Think Tank.....You both are Debaters/Thinkers. Well Done!!!!

First of all to the Observer: Webster hasn't been mayor in what? 10 or 12 years??? LOL and then Crank and O'Keefe??? LOL! Crank and O'Keefe are not politicians. Crank was hired by a biracial committee to help renew downtown Clarksdale.O'Keefe could live anywhere and lives here, because he loves this communitiy. He is a business man that gets no financial help from the citiy or county. He uses his OWN money and talents to try to move us forward. It is almost hilarious rather than sad that you are attacking someone that is using his OWN time and money to help this town. To: Don't Do in Clarksdale. There are so many factual errors in your post that I don't know where to begin. But I will try.The list says partial, because I knew it would not be comprehensive and complete. It was what I could think up on the spur of the moment. Therefore, I named it a parital list to let the intelligent reader know that I knew it was not a complete list. LOL- a Christmas parade can't be held in July. We can't have a Christmas parade every month to make it "year round". Delta Jubilee is held in July, do you want one every month? PLEASE!!! The list I wrote was to show that there are different activities ALL year. Different festivals and acitivities ALL YEAR ROUND, just different ones! How does The Christmas Parade and Delta juliee stagnate the town and not develop it? There was not one activity or thing I listed that will do anything but HELP this town, certainly not Stagnate it? Isle of Capri??? If you look at the title of my post it said Clarksdale/Coahoma County. Isn't the isle in Coahoma County?????The reason I listed the schools was to show the optional not compulsory after school and summmer programs they offer, as WELL as EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NOT COMPULSORY. Get it????You might be surprised how well some of our children would compare to Hattiesburg or New York. Many many fine and outstanding people have come from our schools and NOT just in the distant past. And no I don't want to compare us to Bejing, It's in an oppressive communist system. I prefer Freedom and America. All of the activities I listed are available year round to the vast majority of people. I think everything I listed is"adequate, efficient, and meets state standards".The Boys and Girls Club- Yes, I have been there. What are Juan's complaints and who has he addressed them to? Complaints about what? And what is this about "free", since when do they charge at the Club? Now, to this hard working parent. Guess what? When someone is motivated they can get where they want to go and do what they want to do. School teachers tell me it is the working parents that come to the schools the most. Plenty of people sure found a way to Chris Don's. It's all about your morals, your values and what your priorities are.The lady was right in her post about "Home Training" everybody knows , even if they won't admit it, that most (not all) kids go wrong because of poor or no home training. You say your not about stirring racial animosity? Why the repeated references to "select few", slavery, new tribe" Do you think we don't understand racial code words? You keep carping and griping. OK. what are your big ideas? Tell us what you would do to grow Clarksdale and how you would finance it. I can't wait to read it.

I think it all starts with the local Police department. Today these cops get younger and younger. They lay back in ride kool and writing tickets are their main highlight. I have never seen CPD officers walk up and down the streets unless they are on a call. What happen to real cops Dale / Fernando / James / and the rest of that crew who walked the streets / rode bikes / and weren't afraid to be in the tough areas / or checked out people who was on the corner all times of night? I say we need to get officers who are not afraid to be cops Hoskins get some cops with skills plz If people dont respect the cops / they' re not going give a heck about citizens

WoW! at the previous comment. Noone can argue with that. I still say, home training has taken a back seat to the excuses. Children are a blessing and Parenting is a necessity. It is a Job. It is a journey. It used to be a group effort, but now, Parents frown on others chippin in. Back in the day, Miss Rosey, Miss Haynes, Mrs. Neal & Miss Porter were all my mamas and grandmamas and keepers. They whipped me before my mama did. They corrected me, fed me and nurtured me. The loss of respect for the village has cost us our future. Now it is my turn, (our turn) to nurture and correct. I live in Clarksdale because it is home. I am dedicated to stay and fight for my "HOME". My husband works here, my children attend local neighborhood schools and we take pride in our efforts to maintain our families' namesakes while establishing our own legacies. I encourage other young successful people to come home, build up your old neighborhoods, encourage little Johnny & lil miss Mary to do well, and speak positivity and prosperity for Clarksdale.

Interesting list, tell me would you consider a slice of pie an entire pie? A sip of water an entire pitcher full of water? Logic would dictate not. Yet you offer these partial offerings in your partial listing of things to do in Clarksdale. Two questions must alwayz be exercised when offering such an activity guide:1. Are these activities universally accessible year-round?2. Will these activities serve to enhance and develop or stagnate our town?3. Are these activities adequate, competitive, efficient and effective, meeting and or exceeding state and national standards? When filtering your list of plenty through this not so fine toothed comb, not very many items on your proported list make it to question #3.I'll take a few random examples...Delta JubileeThe Christmas ParadeThe Clarksdale Cinema FestivalAll three of these fail question number 1 simply because they are seasonal and not universally accessible year roundThe Isle of Capri Casinos providing gambling, food and entertainment.Last I checked, this is NOT located inside of the city limits of Clarksdale, sadly, even in your own example you find yourself seeking resources outside of Clarksdale to justify things to do inside of Clarkdale... Just sayin'...Three public high schools and one private, all providing education, after school programs, summer programs, music, art, clubs, sports teams of all kinds all year round. Many public and private elementary schools, providing education, after school programs, summer programs, music, art, clubs and sports. Three public junior highs and one private providing all of the above all year round.I found the submission of schools, since education is compulsory, a bit redundant to being in a functioning city. Akin to exclaiming, "We've got air to breath AND water!" Really? Good for you Clarksdale. So juxtaposing this submission to my question # 3 how well would a Clarksdale 7th grade student do in a basic skills competition against a Hattiesburg 7th grade student or even a New York 7th grade student or what about a Bejing 7th grade student? Is Clarksdale really significantly competitive on a national or global level academically so much that you felt the urge to list a basic requirement as "something to do"?I am just so pleased that you decided to include: Carnagie Public Library, providing a wealth of programs and resources.Revisiting my #1 and #3 queries it would appear that the library is dramatically limited in scope, availability, and resources. I will focus primarily on the access problem. Have you taken the time to find out the library's hours of operation? With that in mind I submit to you two VERY real and probable scenarios:1. Person works all day to keep food on the table, pay taxes and debts. The person works common work hours monday - friday 9am-5pm at the casino since there were no jobs in Clarksdale that were available. The person usually takes shifts on the weekends to supplement their income during the day. After 6pm or so, each day of the week, that person is basically free. Is the option to swing by the library and scoop up a book available to this same person who's tax dollars are paid to keep it open?2. Child is bused to school and has no way of getting to the library on the weekend or afterschool. Child can wait until a relative is free from work at 3pm on sunday to go to the library. Will the child have an opportunity to find a book to read?Boys and Girls ClubReally? Have you been there? Does the Clarksdale Boys and Girls Club hold a mirror to the satellite sites across the country. Is it free for all? I applaud the director, I believe his name is Juan? For doing the best he can with what he's forced to work with...You see my friend, whomever you are, I am not inciting racial hatred, as my message is unity, upliftment and advancement for the ENTIRE city of Clarksdale unlike the current puppets in office that cater to a select few I believe the voices of all citizens have a right to be heard and it is the duty of our elected officials to listen and proactively find ways and means of imrpoving the lifestyle and standard of living for all residents. If Jeff Simmons wants video cameras downtown, I'd say let's find a way to make it happen if it will imrpve our city. If Ronnie the barber believes a curfew for teens walking the streets at all hours should be enforced, I'd think our leadership should be listening and creating a solution that's viable and effective.Death is a sad harsh reality and unfortunately it's occurring at an alarming rate RIGHT HERE IN CLARKSDALE. No one's life should end without a purpose. Those individuals died here in town as a sign that things MUST change because if people feel free to murder at will here now =, what will stop them in the future. NOOO, thhis is the opportune time to look to the people who are suffering from this loss and give them hope that such an atrocity won't soon occur! Sadly, the mayor nor his crew of commissioners felt the need to do anything or speak out about it in an effort to curtail the madness. This is symbolic and tantamount to the mayor saying, hey do whatever as long as you don't bother me and mine I won't mess with you. No where in the CLARKSDALE Press Register has the LEADERSHIP of our town issued a decree or organized an open townhouse meeting to work effectively to eradicate the violence and show criminals that Clarksdale is NOT a safehaven for criminals.I hadn't mentioned any guy for mayor or commissioners I have only advocated a replacement of the current dead weight. BIG Difference. It appears your heart was possibly in a good place when your failed attempt to list things to do in Clarksdale was concocted in your mind. The Clarksdale Chamber of Commerce would be proud of you I'm sure. I like that you try to find the good out of a failing system because you will be able to easily locate the greatness in a new and improved system. Perhaps you'd like to run for mayor or commissioner. I'd listen to what you have to say at the very least. Now is the time to open the doors to untold possibilities and a new tribe will soon emerge to lead the way, I know for God won't allow this to go on any longer. Once upon a time legal physical slavery took place on our very soil but no more. Now we must break the mental psychological bonds of slavery.Up you mighty (hueman) Race! A new tribe cometh!!!

I keep seeing in these posts that there is nothing to do in Clarksdale and that is why young men murder people. I am sure I left out some things. Bottom line, quit the excuses and using the tragic deaths of young people to defame people that have no guilt in these deaths and trying to incite racial hatred to get your guy elected mayor or commisioner.

Clarksdale Man in Memphis, your name says it all. When you get back in town to help make things better instead of talking from a distance you'll be welcomed in the trenches. In the mean time, prayer without good works is dead, much like you said Clarksdale is, which I believe is the reason you left to begin with, so come on back home and help bring some life back into Clarksdale on multiple levels so we can make the changes necessary to improve OUR town for all the residents.

To "Believe It More"....Grant Funds can not be diverted for other uses......these funds must be used for intended purposes stated in the Grants Purpose/Intended Use. Also, to "Clarksdale Man In Memphis" I could not have said/summarized the issues any better than you did, hoping that you have had an impact on the lives of those you have mentored; and respectfully, you remembered the victims and their families. My condolences/sympathies too, to the victims and families.

First of all my condolences to Derrick's family, Byron (please learn from this and become a powerful instrument for righteousness, I pray that you read this and recieve this with love), Kim, Maria, and Mama Ross ya'll are in my prayers.Again another one of the people I've grown up with and have known for over 20 yrs has meet an cruel and violent end. What happened, when we was all little kids growing up playing in East Gate playing football, and baseball with sticks and tennis balls, and pick'em up light'em up with any kind of ball we had at the time. I choose to remember the Derrick who was always tougher than nails and had the heart of a lion, and never met a challenge that he would not attempt to counqer despite him not being the biggest cat around growing up. Mayor Espy or even Barack Obama cannot create magic and change the mindset of those who are oppressed, this is a social stigma that has been cultivating in Clarksdale for a long time, I see a younger generation coming up falling into the same traps mine did. I don't know all the answers, but I what I do know is that we can have all the meetings in the world, vent, holler, blame the local gov't, the parents, the teachers, etc. We can invite the FBI back to Clarksdale like they did back in 90's early 2000's to lock a bunch of brothers up, but over the long term that is only a bandaid for the much bigger problems that plagues too many people in Clarksdale......and that is a deep seeded hatred for one another when everybody is struggling together, a deep seeded inferiority complex that we have against people in our own community and those on the other side of town, and the cycle of poverty and poor education that plagues generation after generation. Knowledge is power don't expect people to change all of a sudden when their personal circumstances has crippled them to be unable to see a better path. I pray that the cats I've had a chance to communcate with over the last 2 days can help be a light to those who are blind. I pray that some young man are reading what I'm saying right now and looking in the mirror to see there's a better way. Pray for Clarksdale and pray for our youth.

Sadly, based on numbers of registered voters compared to those that actually voted then subtracting those that voted for someone other than the current elected officials, less than 10% of those registered to vote kept our current body politic in office. So we may not have physically voted for them but since we DIDN'T vote against them or at all for that matter, this is what we ended up with. Voter apathy in town has been sad but the next election will prove that change has come to Clarksdale. That said, current Espy Administration: Mayor and Board of Commisioners, be prepared to bring your torches to the next tribal meeting and have them all snuffed out and sending you all packing because guess what...The Tribe has spoken!

OMG! it is a shame that we don't have officials that are willing to step fort and help bring some kind of peace to our communities, but look we voted for them so what we need to do i would think is put some people in the offices that are willing to help the people! some one thats going to help bring job"s that pay above minimum wage some thats going to have some thing for the teens do do other than gang bang. This is a means to an end, educate, train, encourage, I ve live in Clarksdale almost 18 yrs and the law's and or rules here I haven't seen no where in the world, who in the hell cuts off light's gas and it's 20 degrees out side and know there are any jobs here people are just trying to make it and the traffic tickets lord have mercy!!!!!! From what i can see just my opinion is that this city wants to do away with our young black males and females and not look back . We come too far to turn back now I repeat Educate , Train, Encourage! Elected officals get some Jobs other tan fast food!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny thing is our current leadership HAS found funding sources and garnered MILLIONS of dollars and guess what our illustrious leader wants to do with the money? Build a trail so people can walk along the river thus fulfilling Grady Palmer's 37 year vision who may now possibly retire from his throne as commissioner. New opportunities for all the residents of this town will come from a NEW body politic in office, hence NEW leadership.Believe it.

"Power concedes to nothing without a demand"... Futhermore, "Power would not even concede to a demand,if that demand comes from a constituency that has no testicles fortititude". In other words,"edit". If you all are really considering becoming a political and social change for Clarksdale (that is more than 70% Black) then just be sincere and start the movement. In the article CHRIS DON DONE Downtown, include a wording that the Club attracked people that are" Anti-Social". These same people that are referred to are you-Us. We are the ONES spending the money inside Clarksdale-Blues Festival, etc.I'm not going to spend all my time and energy on this Foolishness!!! Someone call the meetings of the Black Community-the Hoods and let's began the ground work for the betterment of our community and do away with the white and black Phony and Bootleg politicians from the Mayor and other elects. Real Talk!

The Mayor, Board of Commissioners, Chief of Police, Community/Church Leaders/Activists should collaborate and agree to form a Crime Commission or a Review Body, etc., to review the developing causes of criminal activity, dysfunctional anti-social behavior, reccommendations for corrections, and seek funding sources, bringing safety back to the community, homes, and public places. There must be a Pro-Active Plan put in place to stop the murders, to restore law and order, and demonstrating a regard for each other, resolving differences w/o guns but amicable, but reserving the right to have a difference in opinions on an issue.

that truly loves this town. He owns businesses here that are doing well so he knows what he's doing. He's also running for Governor folks.....Maybe he needs to look at stepping in and seeing what kind of difference he can make in his own back yard. I think he would make great Governor but I'm also afraid that those throughout the state may ask "what has he done in his own hometown?" The citizens in the state of Mississippi know what a hell hole Clarksdale has become. What will they think when looking at who to vote for? Maybe he can make a difference in Clarksdale's crime before moving into the mansion. It can't be just one man's job though. Step up people...this is so sad. What has Clarksdale become....what has it become?

It is truly amazing to see people condemning everybody but the culprits. The mayor and the chief of police can't do anything when someone goes off. These four murders just were not preventable. Those folks chose their path a long time ago. Some maybe had poor parenting or no parenting and some may have had a great family and still go bad. It happens. This kind of thing goes on all over the place and the answer is the country going back to God and Family and not TV, internet and video games and filth.

the function and purpose of leadership is to lead and spearhead the direction of those led. It is the lack of leadership or its inappropriateness that contributes DIRECTLY to the conditions of those led and the overall environment. This statement clearly doesn't absolve the criminals from their behavior BUT apparently there are quite a few people that feel our blues laden environment is ripe for antisocial, violent and criminal behavior.

I am shocked at all of these murders. The problem seems to be guns and people loosing control of their anger. The leadership of the community does not contribute to the formation or lack there of to these problems. There needs to be a ban on carrying guns, mobilization by community leaders, parents, law enforcement, and churches in helping our youth and young adults in seeking non-confrontational means in managing conflict. Perhaps calling 911 should be the preferred choice for handling conflict, rather than a gun battle where most certainly death is immenient for one of the persons or both in the conflict.A babershop is usually filled with joking, fun and laughter, not killing, arguments, etc. Our communities are decling, as well as our regard for each other. Guns are like pouring water on someone, except with a gun an injury or death is most likely the occur. There are no values for our fellow man, and there is usually some force contributing to the lack of values (crime, gang formation to gain control in a community, lack of religious or social affiliations, and unemployment, etc.). C'dale and all the surrouning towns never heard of the level of violence being reported in tis article years ago. The problem needs to be assessed as to its real causation and remedy applied to save the youth/young adults, image of the community and restore safety to the residents.

It is something that ALL this has been going on in Clarksdale and Mayor Espy hasn't made ONE statement about it. He rushed to condemn Chris Don's as the local pariah but we all know the entire city is a living epidemic. Is Espy scared to make a public decree against violence and crime in the city of Clarksdale? Is it a matter of capability? The commissioners that rallied against Chris Don's are they stepping up to and being accountable for the violence happening in their own ward?Do they even have a connection/real relationship with the people in their ward? Must be nice not to be held accountable for what you do as a Mayor and Board of Commissioners and point a high and mighty finger at others when in reality speak if the place was opened illegitimately, who in city government approved it in the first place? Just asking questions, not blaming or accusing. Since they've been quiet on the set, Mayor and Board of Commissioners, what say you??? Hopefully, they'll at least say more than they do and at least act like they care...EXTRA EXTRA!!!City of Clarksdale now preparing to take applications for the position of Mayor, Commissioner Ward 1, Commissioner Ward 2, Commissioner Ward 3 and Commissioner Ward 4. All interested parties are encouraged to stop by and speak w/ the city's personnel director Frances Brunt, 662- 621-8164, who can provide you with insight into the career field and point you in the right direction to make the next step in being the next political rep. for the city of Clarksdale. In the next election Change will come to Clarksdale!

I agree with You Notice! Crime will continue to rise in Clarksdale until local governement sets some stipulations in policy and procedures in the way this town runs! If there was something for people to do here, it wouldnt be as much killing like more community involvement, ymca, support group for teens, men and women! It has to get beeter or it might be our life

The Spin of this story to keep Chris Don negatively in the news by any means necessary?OK, we get it, the powers that be won, Chris Don's is closed BUT as you see, the violence hasn't ended in Clarksdale so I guess it's time to shut the city down too. At this rate we'll have at least 24 people dead at the end of the year due to violent death. One murder is one to many so even though election isn't this year, let's keep in mind, NEW Local Government = Better Clarksdale!!!Let's Get the puppets out and the REAL people in office! What say you???
