There is a story on Page One of today’s Clarksdale Press Register that may be one of the biggest stories we cover in this community this year.
It is certainly one that could set the course for Clarksdale, Coahoma County and the rest of the Mississippi Delta for years to come.
Delta Health System out of Greenville is interested in Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale that is owned or managed by Community Health Systems. Coahoma County holds the lease to our hospital -- your hospital.
While your Clarksdale Press Register has not been made privy to details of this deal, we do realize this is one decision we all have to get right.
Healthcare is critical to our community! When two entities come together to do a multi-million dollar deal, it can be difficult for the community to get information. Your Clarksdale Press Register will even agree that making all those details public immediately might not always be best.
It is apparent Delta Health Systems and Community Health Systems have been talking for some times.
With that said, this newspaper does hope our Coahoma County Board of Supervisors, their consultants, local doctors and the movers and shakers of this community do their homework.
Healthcare - quality healthcare - is literally a life-or-death issue that affects everyone in this town and county.
We could go into the jobs, dollars and economic impact of a hospital and how critical a hospital is to a growing and prospering community.
But the focus today is on making the right decision, the best decision for us.
Our hospital has gone through bankruptcy, several owners and the COVID-19 crisis. We don’t think people around here realize how close we probably came to seeing the doors shut.
Again, we are urging this community and its leaders to guard our hospital and not carry us down another road that we don’t want to go.
All good business deals are a win-win for those involved. We have to make sure Clarksdale and Coahoma County win, too.
