Alcorn students hurt, two dead in Monday shooting


The Claiborne County Sheriff's Department and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is asking for the public's help in finding the person or persons responsible for a shooting that has serioualy injured two people and killed two.

The MBI has said the incident was reported to the Claiborne County Sheriff's Departmetn at 11:45 p.m. Monday night  when the department received a call advising multiple people had been shot at a residence off Hwy 61 south of Port Gibson.

Deputies responded and found four people, all students at Alcorn State University had been shot.

Two of the students, James Carr, 22, of Itta Bena and Tahir Fitzhugh, 19, of Pennsylvania died of their injuries at a local hospital. One additional

student is being treated for his injury at an area hospital and a fourth student is reported to have been injured during the shooting.

A person of interest has been identified and Law Enforcement authorities are attempting to locate him.

This investigation is being conducted by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the MS Bureau of Investigation and the Alcorn State University Police Department.
