Coronavirus death reported in Tunica County

By FLOYD INGRAM / THE PRESS REGISTER,

A death related to coronavirus has been reported in Tunica County and is the first in the region.

The Tunica County COVID-19 Task Force was notified Wednesday evening by the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) of a death within the County of Tunica, which was related to the Coronavirus.

The individual was a female, between the age of 75 and 80, and was a resident of a long-term care facility.

As of Friday, seven deaths had been reported in the state and 579 cases confirmed by the CDC and the MSDH. Mississippi has a population of 2.987 million people.

Immediately following this notification of death, the COVID-19 Task Force contacted the Mississippi State Department of Health for further guidelines and provided the MSDH with several recommendations.

The task force was also in contact with the facility about procedures that are being conducted.

Tunica County Coroner, Glenn Grant, said the individual was pronounced dead on Saturday morning, March 21, and was released to an out-of-county Funeral Home, by the Panola County Coroner, Gracie Grant Gulledge.

The Tunica County and Panola County Coroners requested that this individual be tested due to another individual within this facility testing positive on Friday, March 20.

Once the test was performed, the patient’s test kit was transported to the Mississippi State Department of Health lab, where the test was performed.

The COVID-19 Task Force respectfully asks all citizens of Tunica County and the State of Mississippi to adhere to the recommendations of the CDC and MSDH.

These guidelines and recommendations can be found on the CDC and MSDH websites.
