Gates & Gates Veterinarian

By SPECIAL TO THE PRESS REGISTER,

- Favorite Veterinarian

In the South there is a respect for people, pets and property that you don’t find elsewhere in this county and in Clarksdale people really love their pets.

Gates and Gates Veterinary Hospital and Dr. E.W. Landiss have been named Favorite Veterinarian in the Clarksdale Press Register’s 2020 Readers’ Choice awards.

Veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases and dysfunctions of animals. Specifically, they care for the health of pets, livestock and animals in zoos, racetracks and laboratories. Others work in basic research, broadening our knowledge of animals and medical science, and in applied research, developing new ways to use knowledge to help both pets and humans live better lives.

Gates and Gates has been in business for more than a century as the business has been handed down from father to son to daughter.

“I grew up on a farm with horses, cows, pigs and of course dogs and cats,” said Dr. Landess.

Learning to “read” animals is critical to a farmer and Landess picked up that trait early on. Unlike a human an animal can’t tell the doctor what is wrong. Observation and a complete understanding of different animals is critical to becomeing a successful veterinarian.

Landess said “bedside manner” is important in his field and he feels that was a key reason people voted for him this year.

“I guess they liked the way their pet was treated,” said Landess with a smile.

Landess also pointed to the people who work around him as factors to the businesses success. Vernice Porter is the secretary and pet greeter. Steve Williams is the offices maintenance and kennel man.

“We have been treated well by the people of Clarksdale,” said Landess.

Gates and Gates is located at 381 Sunflower and can be reached by telephone at 662-624-8308.
