Homicide reported, arrest made

Clarksdale recorded its third homicide for 2020 with the death of a local man late last night.

Police were called to the 100 block of 17th Street about 11:45 p.m. Thursday after a citizen called saying a man was lying in the street and had been shot.

Officers found Glynn Busby, 50, of Clarksdale, at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head.

Pafford Ambulance was called to the location, but medical personal were unable to revive Busby. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Mack Harris.

Harris said Thursday an autopsy has been ordered.

Police arrested Aurthor Young, 64, in connection with the shooting.

Young was placed in the Coahoma County Jail and is slated to be arraigned in Clarksdale Municipal Court today.

The case was assigned to Clarksdale Police Department Investigator T. Hawkins and is an active investigation.

Clarksdale Assistant Chief Vince Ramirez has asked anyone with information about this incident to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or simply dial 911. All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving this crime.

Residents are reminded that Clarksdale has a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and there are to be no public gatherings under an order issued by the city.

The shooting was Clarksdale’s third homicide this year.

Brunley McDowell was formally charged Tuesday Jan. 7 with the stabbing death of her husband following an incident at her home. She is currently in the Coahoma County Jail awaiting trial.

Clarksdale police responded to a call of a man deceased on a front porch in the 1400 block of Herrin Street Monday morning and while there were no initial signs of trauma a later examination by the Coahoma County coroner Sonny Meredith determined the man died violently.

Clarksdale recorded 12 murders in 2018 and churches and neighborhoods joined with police to stop the violence and help authorities. Clarksdale only recorded two murders in 2019 as police and the community worked together to crack down on gun violence.

Red’s burglarized

A thirsty burglar could end up going to prison over a couple of cans of beer.

Clarksdale Police responded to a call of a commercial burglary Thursday at Red’s Lounge on Sunflower Avenue.

The owner was checking his business about 4:30 p.m. and discovered someone had broken a window on the north side of the building to gain entry and stolen a few cans of beer. Burglary can carry up to a 20-year sentence upon conviction.

The case was assigned to Clarksdale Police Department Investigator K. Walker.

Shots fired

Clarksdale Police responded to two incidents of shots fired Thursday night.

Officers were called to:

• 1300 block of Maplewood, nothing found.

• 600 block of Bolivar Street, nothing found.

The community is reminded it is illegal to discharge a firearm inside the city limits and citizens are being asked to call 911 immediately if they hear gunshots in their neighborhood and police will respond. Calls can be made anonymously.
