Juneteenth I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest set for Friday

The annual Birthplace of American Music Festival in downtown was scheduled to take place this coming weekend, but it is been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A new date has not been scheduled, but a portion of the events will take place as planned Friday, June 19. A virtual panel discussion on Zoom with Mississippi Today reporter Aallyah Wright, WK Kellogg Foundation program officer Jed Oppenheim, pastor Edward Thomas and People’s Advocacy Institute executive director Rukia Lumumba on several issues will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  One can go to olemiss.zoom.us to receive a meeting ID and passcode.

The Juneteenth I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest celebrating freedom will be from 5 to 8 p.m. The Juneteenth holiday is also African-American Independence Day.

The I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest will be outside the Blues Alley Cafe at 352 Delta Ave., have live entertainment, music, food and community partners.

“We’re just trying to bring everyone to this outside event free to the public,” said BAM Fest co-founder JeCorry Miller. “This is the Juneteenth I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest at the stage and we had the BAM Fest and all the venues (in the past). This year, we just brought the I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest downtown and put it on a smaller scale. That way we could do more with it.

“This year, we just decided to bring it downtown to make it a little bit more quaint in the downtown area outside of Blues Alley Café.”

Miller said the goal is to have the full BAM Fest sometime in the fall. He encouraged people to make donations for the festival at www.bamfestms.com.

“We still want to do it,” Miller said. “We’re just postponing it right now.

“I always said the BAM Fest is the icing and the I.N.V.E.S.T. Fest is the cake. We try to give a two-part thing to bring tourists in and also locals out.”
