The Lee Academy boys basketball team is 3-0 in district play after two wins against North Delta and one win at Kirk Academy.
The Colts (3-3, 3-0) won 72-37 at Kirk Academy Tuesday night with DJ Vassel’s 23 points leading the way.
In an effort to take COVID precautions, Lee is only playing district games. The schedule has been changed so each team in the division plays one district opponent each week.
Lee played North Delta twice last week.
The Colts won 38-36 at North Delta Friday as Vassel once again led the way with 10 points. They also won 68-56 at home against North Delta Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Vassel scored 23 points, Chandler Wells had 7, Bryan Ray had 4, Luke Crumpton had 6, Chris Butler had 18, Watkins Fyfe had 6, and freshman William Walker had 2.
“We knew going into this game that it’s always physical with North Delta and hats off to them because they played really well, especially in the first quarter,” said Colts coach Michael Peckham. “They kind of punched us in the mouth. We woke up a little bit and then we started to asset what I think our strength is, Chris Butler inside, DJ Vassel inside.
“B. Ray is a smaller player out there. He’s undersized, but he’s a slasher, so he gets at the loose balls. Luke Crumpton did a great job of sliding in, in the hole, giving us some rebound help. I couldn’t be more proud of the spurt I got from the kids I subbed, a couple of ninth graders in there.”
The Fillies (5-9, 0-3) are winless in district through three games.
The Lee girls lost 54-44 at Kirk Academy Tuesday.
Faith Carter Bailey led Lee with 14 points followed by Emily Moser and Nyriah Artis with 11 each.
The Fillies lost 78-44 at North Delta Friday.
Moser led the way with 22 points.
Lee opened district Wednesday, Jan. 13 with a 67-30 home loss to North Delta.
Artis had 11, Moser had 7, Maggie Etheridge had 6, Bailey had 5, and Meri Hollis Lawrence had 2.
In spite of the losses, Peckham praised the Fillies’ effort.
“Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of my girls,” said Peckham after the first game against North Delta. “We had three kids that have been out sick and have not practiced in two weeks. One of them was a starter. Then we turn around. It’s hard to practice with seven players, so we’ve been doing that. It’s not the same seven players, so we’ve been doing that probably since Thanksgiving break. For us to go out and play against the No. 1 team in the state for a quarter and a half, I couldn’t be more proud of them. What happened was we ran out of gas.”
Lee is scheduled to host Kirk Academy in a rematch Friday and travel to Marshall Academy Tuesday. Tipoff for both girls games is set for around 6 p.m. with the boys following.
