There is plenty of parking in downtown Clarksdale and merchants, the city and the community want cars parked in them.
But there are a few rules and a need to be considerate to all when parking downtown.
The Clarksdale Police Department has been made aware of people parking incorrectly downtown and it hinders commerce, takes up extra space and can be unsafe.
“We have noticed there have been several people parking their vehicle on the wrong side of the road and parking blocking alley ways in the downtown area,” said Police Chief Robbie Linley. “City Ordinance requires that vehicles must be parked on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic and not the left side facing on-coming traffic on two-way streets.”
The ordinances are pretty clear, most drivers know the rules and police can write tickets for a violation.
And while most people parking downtown follow the rules, those that don’t have become a problem and this could be the only warning they get.
And while people parking on the wrong side of the street and blocking driveways is a chronic problem in neighborhoods. The city’s ordinance for only applies to downtown Clarksdale.
Clarksdale does have ordinance that say unsafe parking or parking in a manner that hinders, blocks or obscures the view down the street can result in a citation.
Ordinances dealing with traffic typically follow Mississippi traffic laws, but Clarksdale Board of Mayor and Commissioners have a process to change ordinance and often use it.
