The Clarksdale Police Department has made two felony arrests over the weekend for possession of a weapon with one of the arrests also seeing a drug charge. Police are also investigating three residential burglaries, an auto burglary and several calls of shots fired.
Police arrested Kenyalla Matthews, 21, for possession of firearm by a convicted felon and have also charged Matthews with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Matthews’ bail was set at $30,000 by an unnamed judge in Clarksdale Municipal Court.
Leslie Pollard, 26, has been arrested by police for possession of firearm by a convicted felon. Pollard’s bail was set at $5,000 by an unnamed judge in Clarksdale Municipal Court.
Residential Burglaries
The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating three residential burglaries reported over the weekend and is asking for the community’s help in solving these crimes.
Police were called to the 200 block Maple Street this weekend after the complainant said someone broke a window to gain entry, stole a jewelry box, China drinking glasses and a toolbox. The house had been unoccupied since Oct. 27.
The 900 block of Vincent Street was the site of a burglary where the thief or thieves crawled in the rear window. The home occupant said a SAR 9mm pistol and a PlayStation 1 console were stolen.
Police responded to the 200 block of Oakhurst Street where the caller said someone forced open the door on the north side of her house. A 58-inch TV, 50-inch TV, Nintendo switch game console, Apple pad and a Chrome book pad were reported stolen.
Police are asking residents to please write down serial numbers of property and that can aid tremendously in the investigation, possible arrest and return of stolen property.
Clarksdale Assistant Chief Vince Ramirez has asked anyone with information about these incidents to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or simply dial 911. All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving a crime.
Residents are also reminded that while Clarksdale no longer has a blanket curfew, juveniles are not to be out from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and parents or guardians or adults with them can be fined for curfew violation of youth in their care or in their car.
Auto Burglary
Police were called to the 200 block of Mississippi Street after the owner of a Red Ford Truck that was unlocked had a Glock 27 pistol stolen.
The serial number to the gun was provided to police and submitted to the FBI National Crime Information Center. Anyone found in possession of this weapon can be charged with possession of a stolen weapon, which is a Class B felony.
Shots Fired Calls:
Police were called to the 1000 Block of Florida Street at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The report said the person heard a single shot, looked outside and saw a group of male subjects running from the area. Police searched the area but were unable to locate any subjects or shells.
A Clarksdale Police officer on patrol in the 1600 Block of Reno Street at 9:53 p.m. Saturday heard a single shot in the area. Officers searched the area but were unable to determine exactly where the shot came from.
Police were called at 11:55 p.m. Halloween Saturday, to the 800 block of Cherry Street on a call of shots fired. Police spoke to residents in the area who said they didn’t hear any shots.
Police were called to the 900 block of School Street at 11:59 p.m. Sunday on a shots fired call.
Police have asked the community to report all shots fired calls, officers will respond and search for evidence that can be used to trace a weapon and build a case in the future. Police also remind residents that the appearance of officers responding to shots fired calls lets culprits know the department takes the firing of a gun in the city limits seriously and is making a concerted effort to arrest and stop this crime.
