Ghalia Volt is playing her new album “One Woman Band” on a 30-day tour and performed at different venues in Clarksdale this past week.
Volt plays guitar and performed at Hooker Grocery & Eatery Clarksdale and Auberge Clarksdale Hostel recently.
“The past 30 days, I’ve done my own tour,” Volt said. “Through this pandemic, I decided to record a ‘One Woman Band’ album because the clubs can’t afford a whole band right now. It’s hard to travel the whole band on the road. It’s very expensive, so I find myself doing a one woman band, recording as such and touring the last 30 days like this.”
Songs on Volt’s album include “Can’t Escape” and “Reap What You Sow.”
Volt traveled by train on the 30-day tour and some of the stops were in Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, California, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Volt is from Belgium, lived in New Orleans and has been coming to Clarksdale since 2014.
“I’m just inspired by what I hear around Mississippi and everywhere else. I grew up in Europe, but I’m fascinated by the blues,” Volt said. “Somehow, I traveled a lot and learned a lot by traveling.”
After leaving Clarksdale, Volt said she planned to go to Jackson, but she would be back for the Juke Joint Festival April 15 to 18 and perform all four days. The venues will be at Hooker Grocery & Eatery Clarksdale, Auberge Clarksdale Hostel, Hambone Gallery, Bluesberry Café and Shack Up Inn.
“It feels like home,” said Volt of Clarksdale. “I see all my friends and play music all the time. I know all the venues, so it’s good to be back. I came here at the Juke Joint Fest seven years ago in 2014.”
Volt said she originally heard about the Juke Joint Festival online. She planned to attend the Viva Las Vegas Festival in 2014, but she never went back because it was at the same time as the Juke Joint Festival. She has been coming to the Juke Joint Festival ever since.
“My heart is here in Mississippi, not in Nevada and superficial Las Vegas,” Volt said.
