The Clarksdale Police Department was called to Delta Health-Northwest Regional Hospital shortly after noon Sunday after a 3-year-old child was brought to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Police reports indicate the incident was reported at 12:30 p.m. and it was later determined the 3-year-old had been shot in the hand after a loaded gun was left on a table and the child allegedly got it and allegedly pulled the trigger.
Police said they were told an adult male came in the apartment on Eighth Street and put his handgun on the kitchen table. Police said they were told the three-year-old picked up the gun in the presence of several adults and a shot was fired.
After stabilizing the child in Clarksdale, the 3-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in Memphis.
The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating the incident that they said was an accidental shooting.
A shooting in Senatobia in November 2020 involved a 2-year-old and her father. In that case police said it was the result of an accidental discharge. The father was later charged with one count of contributing to the neglect of a child.
