The United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) is making financial assistance available to partner with agricultural producers who want to restore and protect habitat, including the bobwhite quail in Mississippi.
Applications that are received by April 2, 2021, will be considered for funding in the first ranking period.
NRCS will invest in habitat restoration for the bobwhite quail.
Research shows a cumulative effect from applying buffers that connect larger blocks of grassland habitat.
"The decisions of agricultural producers can have significant impacts on wildlife," said NRCS State Conservationist Kurt Readus. "By managing land for the bobwhite quail, producers can enhance the quail's habitat while also strengthening their agricultural operations."
The bobwhite quail's conservation efforts are part of the Working Lands for Wildlife Initiative (WLFW), which was launched in 2012 to support struggling landscapes and strengthen agricultural operations. Landowners in the following area counties in Mississippi are eligible to participate in the WLFW Bobwhite Quail Initiative are Chickasaw, Clay, Coahoma, Leflore, Panola, Sunflower and Tallahatchie.
