Dez Williams, an All-Conference star linebacker for Coahoma Community College, has committed to sign with the Northwestern State University to continue his education and football career.
Williams was a leader for Coahoma in both of his seasons with the Tigers. Originally from Mound Bayou, Williams starred at Cleveland Central High School before signing with Coahoma. He was an immediately success, earning all-conference honors in both of his seasons with the Tigers. In his sophomore year he was a 2021 team captain and 1st team all-conference. In his freshman year, he was 2nd team all-conference.
In just eight games, Williams totaled 57 tackles, with 30 of them being unassisted. He had at least nine tackles in half of the games, with season highs of 12 total tackles against the Northeast Tigers and eight unassisted tackles (out of 10 total) against Itawamba.
At 5-foot-11, 230 pounds, Williams carries the potential to achieve great things for the “Purple Swarm” defense of Northwestern defensive coordinator Mike Lucas. In the last 29 games, the Demons defense has forced an impressive 60 turnovers. In the total of 41 games that Lucas has coached the Northwestern State defense, it has forced 90 turnovers.
In just six games in the 2021 spring season, the Purple Swarm defense racked up 49.5 tackles for loss and 20 sacks.
Williams will step into a situation ripe for success. He will join a linebacking corps that already sports a 2nd-team All-American linebacker, Jomard Valsin.
Northwestern State University is primarily situated in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Natchitoches is located on Interstate 49, roughly half-way between Shreveport and Alexandria. Northwestern State is one only six universities to partner with NASA in space research as a member institution in the NASA Joint Venture Program.
The signing ceremony was scheduled for 9:30 on Dec. 15, the national early signing day, at the field house on the Coahoma College campus.
