Some of the Committee’s major findings and considerations include:
- UMMC opened the TEAM (Trustworthy, Evidence-based, Affirming, and Multidisciplinary) Clinic in September 2019 to serve as the clinical arm of UMMC’s Center for Gender and Sexual Minority Health, which seeks to improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQ population in Mississippi. The TEAM Clinic is only opened for a half a day, in the afternoon on the first Friday of each month, by appointment only.
- UMMC modeled the TEAM Clinic off of the Fenway Institute located in Boston, Massachusetts, to address LGBTQ individuals’ barriers to accessing health care, including limited access, negative experiences, and lack of knowledge from providers.
-The TEAM Clinic offers primary care, gender-affirmative medicine, HIV/STD screening and treatment, behavioral health services, and surgical referrals for adults. From FY 2020 to FY 2023 (partial fiscal year), the TEAM Clinic served 298 patients, and UMMC billed payors (e.g., insurance, Medicaid, patient) a total amount of $138,790 for services rendered by providers in the TEAM Clinic.
-From FY 2020 to FY 2023 (partial fiscal year), 78% of patients served by the Clinic were 18 years of age or older. While 22% of patients were minors during this time frame, as of October 7, 2022, the TEAM Clinic no longer provides any services to minors within the Clinic. According to UMMC, any services that were being provided to minors through the Clinic, are now a part of the regular care setting provided by UMMC.
- From FY 2020 to FY 2023 (partial fiscal year), TEAM Clinic expenditures for rent, medical supplies, and support staff, totaled $96,781 (approximately $25,000 each fiscal year). Each year, the TEAM Clinic’s support staff costs account for approximately 59% of total expenditures.
- Due to the limited hours of operations and services provides and the importance of training all staff on providing LGBTQ care, UMMC could consider integrating services of the TEAM Clinic into the regular care setting and offering optional LGBTQ training courses to all staff and students.
