Timothy Burrel

Timothy Burrel -- a soldier, leader, educator, entrepreneur and, most of all, a loving devoted husband and father – died Friday, March 8, 2019, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was 76 years old.

Timothy was born on Feb. 18, 1943, in Lyon to the Rev. George and Rosie Burrel, who preceded him in death.

In 1963, Timothy graduated from Coahoma Junior College.

Later that year, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he served until being honorably discharged on Aug. 3, 1972. He then served in the United States Reserve for more than 30 years before retiring on Nov. 15, 1996.

His education continued with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Mississippi Valley State University in 1966. Timothy received a master’s degree in media science and a specialist degree in administration and supervision from the University of Mississippi in 1977. He received a doctorate in divinity from the Jacksonville Theological Seminary in May 2006.

During his lengthy educational career, Timothy served as a media specialist, teacher, photographer and principal.

He served the community in various capacities: as a minister, member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Fourth District Masonic Lodge, and a past member of the Coahoma County Board of Supervisors.

Timothy is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary C. Burrel; and three children, Timothy Jr., Terrence and Morika Burrel.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 15, 2019, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Royal Funeral Home, 507 Ashton Ave. in Clarksdale. A family hour will follow from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Lyon. Burial will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery on Highway 61 near Lyon.

Arrangements are being handled by Royal Funeral Home.
