Nellie Ann Ellington, 65, a School Teacher, died Jan. 13, 2020 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Visitation is 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020 at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Cleveland. Funeral mass is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Cleveland with burial in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby.


Willie McDowell

Funeral services are 1 .m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at City of Truth in Clarksdale. Bishop Clayton will be presiding. Visitation is 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2020. Burial is at McLaurin Cemetery.

 



Paul J. Miller

Paul J. Miller, 86, a retired postmaster of Rena Lara, died Jan. 10, 2020 at Greenbough Nursing Center. Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home.


Geoff Abraham

It is with great sadness that the family of Geoff Abraham announces his passing on Jan. 7, 2020, at Seasons Hospice Care, Cumming, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Josephine Abraham.

Sunflower River crests, but high waters remain

It appears the Sunflower River peaked at nearly 22 and a half feet in downtown Clarksdale at about 9 p.m. Sunday before starting a slow withdrawal.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the river was at 22.35 feet and starting a slow, steady descent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gage located at downtown Clarksdale.

Lee in North State

The Lee Academy boys and girls basketball teams will both be playing in the North State tournaments after competing in the district tournament at Indianola Academy last week.

The North State tournament is at Heritage Academy with both the Colts and Fillies going in as No. 4 seeds.


Lee seasons come to end

The Lee Academy boys and girls basketball teams both finished in the sweet 16 as their seasons came to an end in the north state tournament.


The Colts, 11-16, lost to Heritage 79-31. Brett Wilson’s 18 points led the way
.

The Fillies, 15-13, lost to Leake 71-18. Emily Moser’s 11 points led the way.
