Visitation is 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov.5, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Clarksdale. Funeral services are noon Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Clarksdale with burial in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery.



Molly Jane Tolar Franks

Molly Jane Tolar Franks, 67, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 in Clarksdale. Born on Aug. 3, 1952 in Clarksdale, she was the daughter of the late Sam V. Tolar, Sr. and Bernice Rowland Tolar.

Mrs. Franks graduated from Clarksdale High School and Delta State College. She served in the Army for six years, achieving the rank of Captain.


Morris Sample

Mr. Morris Sample, 69, of Lula died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019 at home.

A viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2019 at Delta Burial Funeral Home on 615 South State St. in Clarksdale.

Arnett Tillis, 90, born Jan. 30, 1929 to the late Joe Dean and Julia Cox, died in Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 21, 2019. She was a retired teacher from the Clarksdale Municipal School District.


Betty Pike

Betty Pike, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019 in Round Lake Beach, Ill.

Betty was born in Drew on Oct. 6, 1933. She owned and operated Nellie May's gift shop in Clarksdale for many years. She also ran Kathryn’s on Moon Lake with her husband Bob. Betty was a lifelong animal lover and will be missed by her dog Baby.




Vincent Whitehead

Vincent Whitehead, 54, died Oct. 12, 2019 at Methodist University in Memphis, Tenn. Public visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2019 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 at a time to be announced. Burial will follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.

Shortly after attending Clarksdale crime forum, man shot during robbery

Less than an hour after he’d attended a community meeting on crime Monday night, a 44-year-old Clarksdale man was shot multiple times during a robbery at his home.

Darry Jenkins sustained several gunshot wounds in the robbery at his residence along the 400 block of Garfield Street.


Sunflower River crests, but high waters remain

It appears the Sunflower River peaked at nearly 22 and a half feet in downtown Clarksdale at about 9 p.m. Sunday before starting a slow withdrawal.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the river was at 22.35 feet and starting a slow, steady descent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gage located at downtown Clarksdale.

Symphony Shonte Wilson

Symphony Shonte Wilson, 29, of Tunica died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019 in Robinsonville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019 at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksdale with the Rev. Jimmy Glasper presiding.

Delta Burial Funeral Home in Clarksdale is handling the arrangements.



David L. 'Bud' Hester

David L. “Bud” Hester, 79, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

He was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Roxie, son of the late Lee and Jewel Butler Hester.


Noel Monaghan Russell

Noel Monaghan Russell, 63, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, in Stuart, Fla., from complications from a heart attack he suffered several days earlier.

Noel was born in Clarksdale on June 24, 1955, to Mr. and Mrs.  James A. Russell, Jr. and raised on his family’s farm near Jonestown.
