Ms. Lillian Odie Humphries, 101, a Friars Point native, spent her adult life as an elementary school teacher and reading teacher. She was born Dec. 23, 1918 and died Dec. 30, 2019. Her dedication to the craft was shown in how much she cared for her students, how she inspired them to dream, and lives were changed as a result.


Walter Earl McNeal Gates

Walter Earl McNeal Gates, 25, of Clarksdale died Jan. 1, 2019 in Parchman. Public viewing is from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at Hornburger Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020 at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Anthony Jones presiding. Burial follows at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.


Susan A. Byrd

Susan A. Byrd, 56, of Rena Lara,, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in Wynne, Ark. Interment will follow in Johnson Cemetery near Fair Oaks, Ark.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 1 p.m. to service time.


Willie McDowell

Willie McDowell, 55, died Jan. 7, 2020. He was born July 19, 1964.

 

Funeral services are 1 .m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at City of Truth in Clarksdale. Bishop Clayton will be presiding. Visitation is 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2020. Burial is at McLaurin Cemetery.

Sunflower River crests, but high waters remain

It appears the Sunflower River peaked at nearly 22 and a half feet in downtown Clarksdale at about 9 p.m. Sunday before starting a slow withdrawal.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the river was at 22.35 feet and starting a slow, steady descent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gage located at downtown Clarksdale.
