Fatalities mar Mississippi Thanksgiving Holiday

Mississippi recorded one of its worst Thanksgiving holiday highway safety enforcement periods this year, with 10 fatalies reported on state highways and roads.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2019 Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period began Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 12:01 a.m. and ended Sunday, Dec 1 at midnight.



Robert Harvey Waller Jr.

Robert Waller, 77, of Clarksdale, passed away on November 26, 2109, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland. Visitation was 1 to 2 p.m. Nov. 30, 2019, at Ray Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service following immediately after with Brother James Kellum officiating. A burial followed at 3 p.m.


William Glenn Willard, Jr.

William Glenn Willard, Jr., 72, died on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at Peter's Reef, Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, while scuba diving with his family. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale.


Elizabeth Virginia Liberty

Elizabeth Virginia Liberty, 91, of Jonestown died Nov. 22, 2019 at Alliance Speciality Hospital in Greenville. She was born Aug. 12, 1928. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Jonestown with the Rev. Emanuel Lackey presiding. Burial is at St. James Cemetery in Jonestown.

Sunflower River crests, but high waters remain

It appears the Sunflower River peaked at nearly 22 and a half feet in downtown Clarksdale at about 9 p.m. Sunday before starting a slow withdrawal.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the river was at 22.35 feet and starting a slow, steady descent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gage located at downtown Clarksdale.

Shortly after attending Clarksdale crime forum, man shot during robbery

Less than an hour after he’d attended a community meeting on crime Monday night, a 44-year-old Clarksdale man was shot multiple times during a robbery at his home.

Darry Jenkins sustained several gunshot wounds in the robbery at his residence along the 400 block of Garfield Street.
