The following crime reports were released by the Clarksdale Police Department Assistant Chief Vincent Ramirez, Aug. 7 through Aug. 14, 2019.

Vivian Atwood Malatesta

Vivian Atwood Malatesta left this life in the early morning hours of Aug. 4, 2019, at the Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland where she had been a resident of Long Term Care. Vivian first arrived to Frank Atwood and Mary Hall Atwood on Feb. 15, 1930, in Prentiss where she grew up with her five siblings and at least one pet goat named Billy.

Herman Laverne Furniss

Herman Laverne Furniss of Rena Lara, born October 6, 1931 in Belen to Alvy George Furniss and Gertrude Mary Alice Ferguson, died Aug. 7, 2019 at the age of 87. He is preceded in death by his wife Imogene Roark Furniss; they were married August 10, 1950. He is preceded in death by grandson Justin Furniss and great grandson Cody Furniss.

Willie Charles Clark

Willie Charles Clark, 60, of Jonestown died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019 at home.

A public viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2019 at Delta Burial Funeral Home on 615 South State St. in Clarksdale.


Shortly after attending Clarksdale crime forum, man shot during robbery


Less than an hour after he’d attended a community meeting on crime Monday night, a 44-year-old Clarksdale man was shot multiple times during a robbery at his home.

Darry Jenkins sustained several gunshot wounds in the robbery at his residence along the 400 block of Garfield Street.

Sunflower River crests, but high waters remain


It appears the Sunflower River peaked at nearly 22 and a half feet in downtown Clarksdale at about 9 p.m. Sunday before starting a slow withdrawal.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the river was at 22.35 feet and starting a slow, steady descent, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gage located at downtown Clarksdale.


Marie Jordan Pepper

Marie Jordan Pepper, 66, of Clarksdale, died Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Martha Coker Green Houses in Yazoo City after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Marie was born Nov. 9, 1952, in Yazoo City to Charles A. Jordan Sr. and Mabel Norman Jordan.
