Our View: Shop local this summer

This is the start of the summer shopping season and the time of year when people shop for their home, high school graduate and spend a little extra money on a night out or weekend get-together.

And this is also the time of year when community-oriented newspapers urge you to shop at home.

Ester “Jean” Williams, 57, of Clarksdale, died at Baptist East Memorial Hospital in Memphis Sunday, May 12, 2019.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksdale with the Rev. Louis J. Cotton presiding. Burial is at Blaine Cemetery in Blaine.


Jeptha Marchant Gates

Jeptha Marchant Gates, Sr., 74, crossed over on Friday, May 17, 2019. Anyone who knew him felt his amazing spirit. His kindness and quick wit held everyone's attention. Jep was passionate about duck hunting, conservation and soil health.


Michael Ray Bell

Michael Ray Bell, Sr., 65, an Owner/Operator Bell Sheetrock, passed away May 28, 2019 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Oxford, MS. Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019 at Riverside Baptist Church in Clarksdale, MS. Funeral services are 2 p.m.


Virginia Sherman Lavender

Mrs. Virginia Sherman Lavender, 96, passed away at her home at Providence Personal Care Community in Senatobia on May 10, 2019. Born on November 6, 1922, at her family home near Charleston, she was the fourth child of Otey J. and Aline West Sherman. Her family was one of the oldest farming families in the Mississippi Delta.

Shortly after attending Clarksdale crime forum, man shot during robbery

Less than an hour after he’d attended a community meeting on crime Monday night, a 44-year-old Clarksdale man was shot multiple times during a robbery at his home.

Darry Jenkins sustained several gunshot wounds in the robbery at his residence along the 400 block of Garfield Street.
