Billy Hopkins was hesitant to have a retirement party due to the COVID-19 pandemic after working for Farm Bureau Insurance in downtown Clarksdale for 43 years, so friends decided to just drive by and send him off with a reverse parade.

Police investigate shots fired, aggravated assault

The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating two incidents where shots were fired into a home and one where a man was shot.

All three shootings were reported in the space of about 30 minutes Friday night. 

Clarksdale Assistant Chief Vince Ramirez has asked anyone with information about these incidents to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or simply dial 911. All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving these crimes or any other felony in the community.


Leroy Hubert Owens

Leroy Hubert Owens, 96, of Union City, Tenn., formerly of Clarksdale passed away at the Obion County Nursing home, on June 16, 2020.

Graveside services will be held in Clarksdale at Oakridge Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2020 with Dr. Cecil Sewell officiating.




As COVID-19 cases fall, Clarksdale considers mandatory masks

While COVID-19 is still out there, Mississippi is reporting single digit fatality numbers again and Coahoma County has only had six new cases in a week.

The Clarksdale Board of Mayor and Commissioner will consider making people in the public wear masks at it regular board meeting Monday.

Local schools adjusting schedule after coronavirus outbreak

All high schools in Coahoma County are scheduled to open after spring break next week, but due to the coronavirus, three of the districts are not going back until Tuesday.

 

The Clarksdale and Coahoma County school districts and Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School will be closed Monday and open again on Tuesday.

Mississippi's Boys & Girls Clubs come to Clarksdale for celebration

The Boys & Girls Club announces two youth of the year winners for each state — a traditional and military winner.

Each year, the announcement is made in a different community in Mississippi. This year, the celebration was held in the Pinnacle at Coahoma Community College on Friday, March 8.


Rebbie Buckley

Rebbie Buckley, 98, of Charleston, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at her home.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Woolf Funeral Home at 761 McKinley St. in Clarksdale.


Jewel Moore Williams

Jewel Moore Williams, 91, a homemaker, passed away Dec. 27, 2019 at her home. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2019 at Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale. Visitation will also be 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, with the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Meredith-Nowell Chapel in Clarksdale with burial in the Memorial Gardens.


Former Clarksdale High star Jenkins named top lineman in state

JACKSON — Elgton Jenkins, a 2014 Clarksdale High School graduate and senior center for the Mississippi State football team, has been named the 2018 Entergy/Kent Hull Trophy winner signifying the top offensive lineman in Mississipi.

The 6 foot, 4 inch, 310 pound Clarksdale native was chosen by a panel of NFL scouts working the state.
