City eases shutdown restrictions under direction of Governor

Clarksdale will be under executive orders at least one more week as the Board of Mayor and Commissioners decided to mirror the state’s leadership and follow the Governor's guidelines.

“We are in the midst of the second wave of COVID-19 cases in Mississippi,” said Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy. “We have seen an uptick and I want to remind people roaming around, if you don’t have essential business to do, go home.”

Sammy L. Cotton, 67, of Clarksdale died May 30, 2020 at his residence. Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. June 5, 2020 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Heavenly Rest Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. June 6, 2020 with Pastor Kenny Watson presiding.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home.

Dennis E. Thomas, 50, of Jonestown Died May 30, 2020 at his residence. Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. June 5, 2020 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is at noon June 6, 2020 at the Timothy Burrel Building in Jonestown with the Rev. Bennie Brown presiding.

Billy Joe Williams, 81, went to be with the Lord Monday morning April 20, 2020, at Oxford Health and Rehab in Oxford. Billy Joe was born in Sumne, on March 25, 1939, to his parents Joe and Lily Rogers Williams. Billy Joe was married to Meadie Rice Williams for 43 years.


City of Clarksdale hosting free barbecue dinner on Valentine's Day

The city of Clarksdale is inviting the public to come out and fall in love with the city of Clarksdale and its employees during an event scheduled for Valentine’s Day.

The city will be hosting a free barbecue lunch at noon Thursday at the Clarksdale Civic Auditorium Annex at 506 E. Second St.


County to pay $14 per hour for security at Clarksdale Federal Building

When individuals were staying in the Federal Building on Sharkey Avenue at night several years ago, Wood & Wood Security began to have guards in the facility.

The service began during Daniel Vassel’s tenure as county administrator in 2010, but there was no official contract.


Molly Jane Tolar Franks

Molly Jane Tolar Franks, 67, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 in Clarksdale. Born on Aug. 3, 1952 in Clarksdale, she was the daughter of the late Sam V. Tolar, Sr. and Bernice Rowland Tolar.

Mrs. Franks graduated from Clarksdale High School and Delta State College. She served in the Army for six years, achieving the rank of Captain.
