Police investigate shots fired, aggravated assault

The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating two incidents where shots were fired into a home and one where a man was shot.

All three shootings were reported in the space of about 30 minutes Friday night. 

Clarksdale Assistant Chief Vince Ramirez has asked anyone with information about these incidents to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or simply dial 911. All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving these crimes or any other felony in the community.



Leroy Hubert Owens

Leroy Hubert Owens, 96, of Union City, Tenn., formerly of Clarksdale passed away at the Obion County Nursing home, on June 16, 2020.

Graveside services will be held in Clarksdale at Oakridge Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2020 with Dr. Cecil Sewell officiating.

Coahoma County’s Jaylin Jones enrolls at Mississippi School for Math, Science

COLUMBUS – The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) has accepted 130 new junior students to study in at the prestigious public high school this fall.

Jaylin Lyndell Jones from Coahoma County Jr./Sr. High School is one of those from across the state carefully selected to attend. He is the son of Nellie Jones.

Eunice Denise Farmer

Eunice Denise Farmer, 63, a homemaker out of Dundee, died June 3, 2019 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Riverside Baptist Church in Clarksdale. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Baptist Church in Clarksdale with burial in the Oakridge Cemetery.


Channie Mae Abby

Channie Mae Abby, 89, of Clarksdale died Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Delta Regional Medical Center in Cleveland.

A public viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2019 at Delta Burial Funeral Home on 615 South State St. in Clarksdale.


Cora Lee Slaughter

Cora Lee Slaughter, 90, of Clarksdale died June 6, 2020 at her residence.

Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. June 11, 2020 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held at noon June 12, 2020 at Heavenly Rest Cemetery with Pastor Freddie DeShazer presiding.

Arrangements are entrusted Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home.



Mississippi's Boys & Girls Clubs come to Clarksdale for celebration

The Boys & Girls Club announces two youth of the year winners for each state — a traditional and military winner.

Each year, the announcement is made in a different community in Mississippi. This year, the celebration was held in the Pinnacle at Coahoma Community College on Friday, March 8.
