Coahoma coronavirus count

A higher than normal COVID-19 infection count and easy accessibility to Memphis, Arkansas and the heart of the Mississippi Delta are reasons Coahoma County was chosen as one of the state’s first two mobile testing sites last week.

Twenty-five Coahoma County residents took advantage of the mobile testing site for the coronavirus in the parking lot of the Expo Center throughout the day on Friday, March 27. The Mississippi State Department of Health and the University of Mississippi Medical Center organized the testing.




Coahoma County virus count at 26 as of Friday

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Coahoma County rose by four Friday and now stands at 26 after the county first reported two cases on March 18.

There still have not been any Coahoma County deaths attributed to COVID-19. With the community now 17-days into the pandemic, it is apparent some of those 26 have gotten well.

Local schools adjusting schedule after coronavirus outbreak

All high schools in Coahoma County are scheduled to open after spring break next week, but due to the coronavirus, three of the districts are not going back until Tuesday.

 

The Clarksdale and Coahoma County school districts and Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School will be closed Monday and open again on Tuesday.

George Henderson, 74, of Detroit, Mich. died Jan. 15, 2020 at Harper Hospital in Detroit, Mich.  At 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 public viewing was at Mt. Tatyana R. Anderson, 20, of Robinsonville died Jan. 22, 2020 at  Baptist Desoto in Southaven,. Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 31, 2020 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is 2:30 p.m. Feb. 2, 2020 at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Luster Tyler presiding. Burial follows at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.

Charles Milton Lowe

Charles Milton Lowe, 83, formerly of Clarksdale, MS, moved to Merigold in 1973.  He  passed away in Cleveland on Sept. 14, 2019, at Bolivar Medical Center.

Visitation was from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, at Ray Funeral Home.


Molly Jane Tolar Franks

Molly Jane Tolar Franks, 67, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 in Clarksdale. Born on Aug. 3, 1952 in Clarksdale, she was the daughter of the late Sam V. Tolar, Sr. and Bernice Rowland Tolar.

Mrs. Franks graduated from Clarksdale High School and Delta State College. She served in the Army for six years, achieving the rank of Captain.

Lee McGarrh, Jr., 69, of Perkinston, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee McGarrh, Sr. and Earline C. McGarrh.

Katherine Furr, 89, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019, at her home in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Katherine loved serving Coahoma County for 16 years as a county supervisor. She was a very dedicated lady.
