This is the start of the Back to School shopping season and Tax-Free Weekend is Friday and Saturday. It is the weekend when people traditionally shop for their kids and spend a little extra money on a night out or weekend get-together before school starts.
George Evans Jones, Jr., 78, of Columbus died on July 31, 2020 at West Point Community Living Center in West Point. He was born July 21, 1942 in Columbus to Willie White and George Evans Jones, Sr. He was a Pharmacy Clerk for 15 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church. George was a Veteran of the Army National Guard.
Ethel Johnson, 70, of Clarksdale, born in December 1950, died.
Funeral services are noon Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020 with the Rev. Tyler officiating. Graveside services are at Oak Ridge Cenetery. Visitation is 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2020 at Century Funeral Home.

William "Billy" Lee Andrews, Sr., 76, an Accountant from Clarksdale, died Friday, July 31, 2020 at home. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clarksdale. Meredith Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale is handling the arrangements.
Someone may have jumped off the Helena Bridge over the Mississippi River early Tuesday morning and authorities are looking for a man and information about him.
The West Helena Police Department received a call about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday of an unoccupied SUV on the bridge with the lights on and the driver’s door open.

Coahoma County posted its first reported case of coronavirus in a nursing home Monday, while the state saw the traditional drop in cases reported over the weekend.
Mississippi reported only one death from the disease on Monday.
Coahoma County went 118 days into the pandemic without a case of the virus reported in a Long Term Care (LTC) facility. The state’s case count for LTC’s also includes staff who test positive with the disease and not just residents of those facilities.
There have been no deaths reported in LTC’s in Coahoma County.

The Mississippi State Department of Health released the number and apparently there had been some confusion between where the person actually lived and where they died.
The Clarksdale Police Department responded to three incidents of gun fire Monday night with the final call finding two people shot.
The first call came in at 7:57 p.m. Monday from the 400 block of Catalpa Street with a woman telling police she was sitting in her home when she heard gunshots outside.
An accident occurred in downtown Clarksdale on the corner of East Second Street and Delta Avenue at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Members of the Clarksdale Police Department and Pafford Emergency Medical Services were at the scene.
Students from St. Elizabeth Catholic School are participating in a “backpack project” to help feed needy children who would otherwise have to go hungry all weekend.
This is the third year of the project and Immaculate Conception and St. Elizabeth Catholic churches partnered to make it happen.

Dillard Dee Melton, Sr., 86, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019, at his home in Tutwiler.
Mr. Dillard was a workaholic, avid hunter and cotton grower who lived and breathed farming.
