First Nursing Home Case Reported In County

Coahoma County posted its first reported case of coronavirus in a nursing home Monday, while the state saw the traditional drop in cases reported over the weekend.

Mississippi reported only one death from the disease on Monday.

Coahoma County went 118 days into the pandemic without a case of the virus reported in a Long Term Care (LTC) facility. The state’s case count for LTC’s also includes staff who test positive with the disease and not just residents of those facilities.

There have been no deaths reported in LTC’s in Coahoma County.



Rash of burglaries reported in Clarksdale

It’s summertime and burglaries – especially auto burglaries – are the crime of the season as crooks and juveniles look for easy opportunities to steal.

Police ask that you please lock your doors, park in lighted areas and anyone who sees someone suspicious lurking around vehicles to please call police and they will respond.



Care Station to host fourth mobile food pantry

COVID-19 stopped many businesses and institutions, but it has not stopped CARE Station from serving the hungry of this community.

The Care Station and Mid-South Food Bank will host their fourth mobile food pantry distribution at the Expo Center next week. Approximately 13-tons of food was distributed in their last effort.

Leroy Hubert Owens

Leroy Hubert Owens, 96, of Union City, Tenn., formerly of Clarksdale passed away at the Obion County Nursing home, on June 16, 2020.

Graveside services will be held in Clarksdale at Oakridge Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2020 with Dr. Cecil Sewell officiating.


As COVID-19 cases fall, Clarksdale considers mandatory masks

While COVID-19 is still out there, Mississippi is reporting single digit fatality numbers again and Coahoma County has only had six new cases in a week.

The Clarksdale Board of Mayor and Commissioner will consider making people in the public wear masks at it regular board meeting Monday.

Patricia Boyd Giles, 79, died Jan. 17, 2020, at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, Tenn. Visitation is 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church in Clarksdale. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Clarksdale with burial in the Oakridge Cemetery.

Terry Lake, 60, of Clarksdale died Jan. 21, 2020 at Greenbough Nursing Home. Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 31, 2020 at Hornburger-Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Feb. 1, 2020 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Leslie B. Howard Sr. presiding. Burial follows at Oakridge Cemetery.

Lavon D. Dye

Lavon D. Dye, 87, of Randolph, a retired security guard with Sunshine Mills in Tupelo, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Mr. Dye was a U.S. Air Force veteran, where he guarded the atomic bomb. He loved gardening and farming. He also raised miniature horses, llamas, cows and ducks.



Howard Smith

Howard Smith was called to his reward on May 4, 2018, as a result of a heart attack, reaching the age of 83.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1935, in Chickasha, Okla., to Dan and Lena Smith. He was the fourth child in a family of 12 children. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to DeRidder, La.
