Fatalities mar Mississippi Thanksgiving Holiday

Mississippi recorded one of its worst Thanksgiving holiday highway safety enforcement periods this year, with 10 fatalies reported on state highways and roads.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2019 Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period began Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 12:01 a.m. and ended Sunday, Dec 1 at midnight.



William Glenn Willard, Jr.

William Glenn Willard, Jr., 72, died on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, at Peter's Reef, Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, while scuba diving with his family. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale.


Robert Harvey Waller Jr.

Robert Waller, 77, of Clarksdale, passed away on November 26, 2109, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland. Visitation was 1 to 2 p.m. Nov. 30, 2019, at Ray Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service following immediately after with Brother James Kellum officiating. A burial followed at 3 p.m.


Elizabeth Virginia Liberty

Elizabeth Virginia Liberty, 91, of Jonestown died Nov. 22, 2019 at Alliance Speciality Hospital in Greenville. She was born Aug. 12, 1928. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Jonestown with the Rev. Emanuel Lackey presiding. Burial is at St. James Cemetery in Jonestown.

Elnora Palmtag

Elnora was born Aug. 9 1949, the daughter of Pearlie May Yarbrough & the late Tom Daniel Fondren, on a plantation in Glendora.  On Nov. 6, 2019, Elnora died at the age of 70.


Lucy Terry Erby

Lucy Terry Erby, 101, of Clarksdale died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019 at Clarksdale Nursing Center.

A viewing will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2019 at Delta Burial Funeral Home on 615 South State St. in Clarksdale.


Willie George Haynes

Willie George Haynes, 71, son of the late Freddie and Amanda Haynes of Cagle Crossing Road, Tutwiler, passed at 12:16 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 2019 at Baptist DeSoto hospital in Southaven. Per his request, his remains were donated to Medical Research.


Christine (Tina) Dampier McGee

Christine (Tina) Dampier McGee, 66, of Cordova, Tenn. died Nov. 16, 2019 at her residence. Public viewing is 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2019 at Hornburger Byas Funeral Home. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Nov. 23,2019 at New Beginning M.B. Church in Clarksdale. The pastor will be announced later.


Gloria Tarzi Ryals

Gloria Tarzi Ryals, 90, of Clarksdale retired retail sales at Sherman’s Fashions, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 at Methodist University in Memphis. Visitation was 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 201  at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Clarksdale with a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. Funeral mass was at 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2019 at St.

Coahoma County grand jury indicts 45 in December

There were 82 indictments against 45 defendants handed out by members of Coahoma County grand jury that met Dec. 4-6 at the Coahoma County Courthouse in Clarksdale.

There were 23 cases in which the grand jury issued a no true bill which means the grand jury didn’t find enough evidence to charge the defendant with violating a law.

Lee Academy students are now talking about 'habitudes'

In an effort to help Lee Academy students with their growth as individuals, the school implemented a "habitudes program" from the company Growing Leaders based out of Atlanta into the curriculum beginning last week.

Lee Academy partnered with Planters Bank to make the program for students become a reality.
