Mike Hurst, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, announced Thursday that he has submitted his resignation to President Donald J. Trump and Acting Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen and will leave the Department of Justice on January 19, 2021.

Hurst, a native of Hickory, was appointed by Trump in June 2017.

The Clarksdale High School boys basketball team, now 5-2 on the season, split its two games this past week.

The Wildcats earned a 60-44 win at home against Shaw High School Thursday night.

Clarksdale outscored Shaw 20-10 in the third quarter to pull away after leading by the narrow margin of 25-21 at halftime.

The Griot Arts Annual Fall Feast raised as of Thursday night $46,529 with additional donations from the not included in the final number. Representatives thanked the community for continuous support of the work along with new sponors for their efforts. The fall feast was outside of Meraki Roasting Company on Sunflower Avenue.

Coahoma Early College High School assistant basketball coach Thomas Williams Sr. added five boys and five girls to his ESPNTom All-State Basketball Team for the 2019-20 season that appeared in last week’s Press Register.

Williams Sr. said every year the boys and girls would each have 15 athletes on the team.

Coahoma Early College High School assistant basketball coach Thomas Williams Sr., whose nickname is “ESPNTom,” is recognizing achievements of players in Coahoma County with his first ESPNTom All-State Basketball Team for the 2019-20 season.

Williams Sr. named one team for the boys and another for the girls with 10 athletes each.

The Lee Academy junior high Colts won their recent Region 1-3A basketball tournament at Marshall Academy in Holly Springs.

The Colts (17-3, 7-3) defeated Macon Road Baptist School 58-20 in the championship.

William Walker led Lee Academy with 19 points followed by Bryan Ray with 13 and Watkins Fyfe with 12.

The Lee Academy boys basketball season came to an end in the Elite 8 of the MAIS Class 3A State Tournament with a 74-45 loss to Columbia Academy at Canton Academy Wednesday, Feb. 19.

DJ Vassel and Bryan Ray finished with 8 points each, Gage Murphy scored 7, and Brett Wilson and Phillip Brownlee contributed 6 each.
