Dear Editor,
As a resident in Lyon, Mississippi, and a property owner in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and Dundee, Mississippi, I am appalled at the upkeep of public and private properties.
For instance, as I traveled from Lyon to Clarksdale on the old Lyon Road the property in Lyon is manicured and perfectly kept. But, as I left the town of Lyon and headed toward Clarksdale, I couldn’t help but notice the trash, couches, mattresses and various things that have been thrown along the road. This has been on the road for a long time.
Who is responsible for the upkeep of this property?
Is it the City of Clarksdale, or Coahoma County?
Shame on whoever it is.
Also, property beside the railroad tracks is all overgrown. The same is true when I travel from Clarksdale to Lyon on South Edwards.
This is a disgrace to our community and as a taxpayer, I think something should be done about it.
As a property owner at Moon Lake, I have an issue with how seldom the County picks up trash that has been placed on the side of the road. I travel the same route to my lake house and the same discarded items are an eyesore on the road.
In the last several years the City of Clarksdale and the Town of Lyon have been in litigation regarding the City annexing property around Lyon into the City of Clarksdale. After hundreds of thousands of dollars spent with lawyers, the Truck Stop was annexed into the City of Clarksdale.
Why would the city want more property, when the city cannot properly maintain the property it already has?
How in the world can we attract anyone to our community when they take a good look at how public property is maintained? We should all keep contacting our public representatives until this situation is corrected.
Oh, and last but not least, there are people that are always at the gazebo on Sunflower Avenue. I work on Sunflower Avenue and have been approached for money to buy a beer or just money period. I trust no one and do not want any strangers approaching me for money.
The same is true as I go to the City of Clarksdale Post Office. There are people on the steps of the post office asking for money and handouts.
Please, please, make our city a safe place again so that we can perform our daily duties without fear of someone waiting on the side of our car to harass us as we try to just work!
Sincerely,
Alan and Mary Foster,
Lyon, Mississippi
