On Friday, Jan. 24, the Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of four incidents involving officer-involved shootings.
Three of them were deemed justifiable. A fourth case saw Hinds County Grand Jury indict two former Capitol Police officers for aggravated assault.
These include:
• An Oct. 11, 2022, incident in Greenville involving seven officers with the Greenville Police Department and two deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
• An Aug. 22, 2023, incident in Canton involving four deputies with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
• A Jan. 4, 2024, incident in Beaumont involving five officers with the George County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Mississippi Highway Patrol.
In all three incidents, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.
In addition:
• On Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, a Hinds County Grand Jury indicted former Capitol Police Officer Jeffrey Walker and current Capitol Police Officer Michael Rhinewalt on two counts each of aggravated assault related to an August 14, 2022, officer-involved shooting.
The incident was investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
While this case is in active litigation, our office will not comment further on the matter.
Pursuant to Section 45-1-6 of the Mississippi Code, the reviews followed an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
