Charles Hale, chief deputy for the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, brought different law enforcement agency representatives and public officials for a surprise appreciation lunch honoring Sheriff Charles Jones Friday afternoon.
The lunch took place at the Coahoma County Courthouse.
“(He’s done) a lot of community service, going out with COVID, bringing in people that needed a ride during the storm to go to the hospital and various things like issuing out different food plates on Friday, assisting the elderly receiving food and countless things,” Hale said.
Jones said the celebration was special.
“They really surprised me today,” Jones said. “I’m grateful. I’m thankful. I’m definitely thankful and grateful.”
Tunica County sheriff K.C. Hamp was scheduled to be in Coahoma County for a meeting. Hamp was able to bring Jones to the celebration.
Jones appreciated other officers supporting him.
“We’re supporting each other,” Jones said. “We have limited resources and all these counties. We put all of our resources together.”
Hale concurred.
“We’re working a team effort,” he said. “That’s what we’ve got to have.”
Hale said a mass text was sent out to everyone invited to the celebration and the main staff already knew about it.
“We actually tried to limit telling people,” said Barbara Jakes, triad director for the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office. “Even the deputies just found out yesterday evening and today this morning because it’s hard to surprise a person around here in Coahoma County. This is well-deserving. The Sheriff deserved this appreciation and we wanted him to be surprised.”
Jones is serving his second term as Coahoma County Sheriff and has been in law enforcement most of his life.
