The first Crossroads Blues, Brews and Barbecue Festival took place on Delta Avenue in downtown Clarksdale on Mother’s Day weekend in May.
Crossroads Blues, Brews and Barbecue Festival founder JeCorry Miller said is the event is part of the annual BAM Fest that takes place at the same location.
“Be on the lookout,” he said. “BAM Fest is coming June 19 Father’s Day weekend. This is our Mother’s Day weekend event. Father’s Day weekend and Juneteenth weekend, it will be Birthplace of American Music Festival and this is just a Birthplace of American Music Festival LLC event. We’ll be having more to come so that will be what’s coming next.”
Dennis Sculark of Scully’s Tasti Eats won the barbecue competition and the other competitor Michael Banks of Chef Mikey Bee’s came in second at the Crossroads Blues, Brews and Barbecue Festival. The Memphis Barbecue Network hosted the contest and gave the guidelines on how to run an official barbecue contest.
“It was real good,” said Sculark of winning the contest. “I was glad to be in. I kind of wish there were more people, but it was the first time. I’m hoping the next time we can make it bigger, make it better.”
Sculark made brisket, pull pork, chicken and ribs. He felt his seasoning was the difference in winning the contest.
“I’m big on seasoning,” Sculark said. “I don’t like a lot of salt. I think I’ve got some good seasoning. Some people like sauce. I like seasoning.”
Sculark will be prepared to defend his title next year.
“I’m going to have a target,” he said. “I’m a big guy. I can handle it.”
Miller said the festival will have a BAM Barbecue in Town contest in the future. That will be a taster’s choice contest.
“It was a great event,” Miller said. “I’m glad some people came out. I wish more participants would have participated, but everything’s turned out pretty good. Hopefully, we can do this every year. We are planning on doing it every year. This was our first local one. In the next couple of years, we’re going to actually connect it to the network and make it where it’s a sanctioned event for all of the barbecue competitors.”
Terry “Harmonica” Bean, Lady Trucker, Jordan Sledge & Night Cast, The Southern Soul Band, Jr Blu, Lady Iretta and Johnny B all played during the event.
“I personally want to thank all the patrons, performers, participants and everyone who came out to support this event,” Miller said.
“If you missed the good time, don't do it again,” continued Miller with a laugh.
