A man has been arrested in connection with an early-Sunday shooting death in Webb, Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly announced late Friday afternoon.
The suspect is identified as Raymond Rembert Jr., 22, whose address is 313 Mayflower Circle, Tutwiler.
Rembert is charged with first-degree murder in the gun slaying of Dontavious Lamar Garner, 22, of 205 Hopson St., Tutwiler, who was shot multiple times in a crowded section of Main Street in Webb shortly after midnight, Fly had noted.
Rembert also is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of a 30-year-old Webb female at the scene who was hit by a bullet and taken to a Ruleville hospital, where she was treated and released. The sheriff said she is believed to have been an "innocent bystander."
Fly said Rembert is being held at the Yalobusha County Detention Center in Water Valley on a bond of $850,000 set by Tallahatchie County First Judicial District Justice Court Judge Shannon van der Poel. Second District Justice Court Judge Denise Washington recused herself, the sheriff noted.
As late as Tuesday, Fly had said officials were not close to identifying a suspect in the case, but that changed on Wednesday when warrants for Rembert's arrest were issued "due to new developments in the investigation," he noted Friday.
The sheriff said Rembert was taken into custody without incident at 1:24 p.m. Friday at his parents' home on First Street in Webb. In addition to sheriff's deputies, Fly said the Sumner Police Department assisted in making the arrest.
Fly declined to comment on whether investigators have recovered a weapon. He initially reported that officials recovered five, 10 mm shell casings from the street at the scene of the shootings.
He said it is thought that Rembert acted alone and that Garner was the intended target.
"We believe there was a conflict between the two individuals," he added, without elaborating.
Fly said the investigation is ongoing and noted that officials welcome any additional information that may be provided by the public.
The sheriff said anyone who has any information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office in Sumner at 662-375-8676 or in Charleston at 662-647-5511 or 662-647-3700.
