Carol Cohen Slutsky, aged 81, passed away on Oct. 17, 2023, following a brief illness. She was born in Memphis, Tenn., to Sadie and Simon Weiner, and later graduated from the Lausanne School for Girls. Carol enjoyed a joyful childhood, actively participating in school and fostering a vibrant social life.
In 1966, she married Stanley M. Cohen and relocated to Clarksdale, Miss.
There, she created a warm and welcoming home for Stanley, realizing her dream of raising a family with three children and a station wagon. As a devoted and hands-on mother, she engaged in every aspect of her children's lives, caring for Amy, Fred, and Stuart.
Carol was deeply involved in the Clarksdale community. She held a prominent position as the President of Hadassah and was a dedicated member of the Temple Beth Israel Synagogue, where she also served as the President of the Sisterhood. For many years, she tirelessly contributed to the Clarksdale Care Station, preparing meals for those in need. Her commitment extended to volunteering at the Clarksdale Hospital as a candy striper.
In 1996, Carol became a grandmother for the first time, cherishing her role with her six grandchildren. She and Stanley divided their time between Florida, where her grandchildren resided, and Clarksdale. Although Stanley passed away in 2000 after a joyful 34-year marriage, Carol found a second chapter in her life when she met and married Elliott Slutsky of Memphis, Tenn. in January 2004.
Carol and Elliott divided their time between Memphis and North Palm Beach, Florida. She took immense pride in her grandchildren and actively participated in their lives, attending their sports events, recitals, and shows. Together, Carol and Elliott explored various destinations, including Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and Maine, while maintaining a vibrant social life with many close friends. Their enduring love and companionship remained unbroken until the very end.
Carol Cohen Slutsky was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Cohen, her parents Simon and Sadie Wener. She is survived by her husband, Elliott Slutsky, her children, Amy Devore (Jeff Devore), Fred Cohen (Shana Cohen), and Stuart Cohen (Stephanie Cohen). Her cherished grandchildren are Ben Devore (Hope Grossman), Peyton Cohen, Ashley Devore, Sydney Cohen, Sam Cohen, and Sadie Cohen.
Carol's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her remarkable journey was marked by compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for her family and community. May she rest in eternal peace.
Graveside services are Thursday 10 a.m., Oct. 19, 2023, Beth Israel Cemetery, with Meredith-Nowell in charge of arrangements.
