Clarksdale Public Utility is issuing a boil water notice for all customers, effective immediately.
This precautionary measure is being taken in response to a systemwide loss of water pressure occurring in Clarksdale Wednesday morning.
"While we have not had any bad water samples, we are acting out of an abundance of caution and concern for our customers," said CPU General Manager Curtis Boschert. "This boil water notice will be in effect until sufficient clean samples are verified. In the meantime, we sincerely appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our customers.
A leak at one of the Clarksdale Public Utility wells Tuesday night has prompted the utility to ask water customers to conserve water until the pressure builds back up.
The leak occurred at the CPU South Plant off of Desoto Avenue. The break reduced the amount of water pumped into elevated tanks around town and many customers noticed reduced water pressure Wednesday morning.
Boschert said Wednesday morning that the leak had been fixed and tanks were refilling.
"We are asking the community to conserve water until the pressure builds back up," said Boschert. "The wells are working and it will just take a little time."
Boschert initially said the lines never lost pressure, the water was safe and there is no need to boil water. The boil water notice was issued Wednesday night by CPU.
Boschert also said reports on social media that CPU was "turning off the water," are not true.
The rumor is actually making things worse as people turn on the tap to fill up containers thinking the water will be turned off.
Anyone with water or electrical concerns is asked to call CPU at 627-8499 and have their address handy.
As of Wednesday morning, CPU was not reporting any major electrical outages due to the winter storm.
