It was homecoming night at Greenwood High School and the Clarksdale Wildcats had the first dance with the Bulldogs, taking a 42-6 win.
It was the first district game for both schools and Clarksdale is 5-1 on the season and ranked 33rd in the state according to MaxPreps and 8th in Division 4A. Clarksdale stands atop the 4A-Region 3 bracket, and faces No. 2 district foe Gentry this weekend. Gentry is also 5-1, losing a close game to Leflore County, 8-6, two weeks ago.
Clarksdale hosts Gentry for its homecoming tonight at 7 p.m.
“Gentry is not going to be Greenwood,” said Clarksdale Coach Johnny Maddox. “They play hard and are well coached.
“We are going to stick with our game plan and make a few minor changes,” Maddox added. “We know what works and we know who we can count on.”
And those that Maddox can count on, play the offensive and defensive line.
“The offensive line of James Lewis, Fred Duma, Patrick Johnson, Kyron Williams and London Butler played well Friday night,” said Maddox. “The backs ran to the hole or the corner and did their part, too.”
Clarksdale finished the night with over 500 yards of offense.
The Wildcat defense was not scored on. Greenwood’s lone touchdown was a kick return in the second quarter by their speedster Ramone Tate.
Clarksdale’s defense has only allowed 51-points in five games with two of those games being shutouts.
Clarksdale received the ball first to start the game and eight plays later, the Wildcats scored off a quarterback scramble of 30-yards by Kelley Jones. Jones came back in the second quarter with a 90-yard touchdown run, improving the Wildcat’s lead to 14-0.
Greenwood’s offense couldn’t find an answer to Clarksdale’s defensive attack.
The Wildcats stacked on two more rushing touchdowns in the second quarter.
Running back Monrekus McGregory scored the Wildcats’ third TD and Kelley tacked on another long run of 70 yards.
The third quarter saw McGregory get his second touchdown and Kelley once again running to the corner on a score that covered 30-yards.
Kelley would finish the night with 356 yards.
