Clarksdale played up a storm in a rain soaked game against Indianola Gentry Friday night Sept. 27.
While the stands were empty those who ventured out saw the Wildcats score a safety, run the ball with authority and play that pounding Clarksdale defense for a 32-12 win over Gentry.
“You can make them practice with a wet ball, but it’s not the same,” said Clarksdale Coach.Curtis Kemp. “But I was pleased. We got out there, got muddy, made the plays on defense and scored on offense.”
It was a bobbled snap on a Gentry punt attempt that led to Clarksdale’s first score as the Gentry punter dropped the ball picked it up, was tackled and the Wildcats got the safety.
The Gentry Rams came back as the first quater wound down to score, but could not get the extra point.
Clarksdale bounced back early in the second quarter with running back Mecos Maiden crashing over from 3-yards out. Maiden came back to score the 2-pt conversion.
Gentry scored midway in the second, but so did Clarksdale with Maiden scoring from the 11 and then toting the ball in for the 2-point conversion.
Clarksdale carried an 18-12 lead into the locker room and Clarksdale was in control.
Maiden ran the ball four straight times in the third quarter to cover 42 yards and score on a second-and-one. He hopped over the Gentry defense for the 2-pointer.
Maiden came back with 2:44 to go in the third to score again, but the 2-point was no good.
Clarksdale was in control and would close the third quarter at 32-12.
Kemp called off the dogs and put in the second team.
“I wanted them to get their jersey’s muddy,” said Kemp. “We are coming along, improving and we’re healthy. It was a good win.”
Clarksdale’s defense was tough up front with Senior tackle Jamaine Logan, getting five solo stops, recovering a fumble and notching numerous assists.
Clarksdale is now 3-3 on the season and Gentry is 1-4
Clarksdale plays the Southaven Chargers (0-5) Friday night in a non-district home game.
Clarksdale starts district play Oct. 11 at home with Lafayettte.
