NEW YORK – It was a historic day for Ole Miss women’s basketball as former Rebel Marquesha Davis was named a WNBA Champion in her rookie year with the New York Liberty.
In an outstanding game five of the WNBA Finals ’24, the Liberty pulled out a gritty 67-62 overtime victory over the Minnesota Lynx in New York to earn revenge from last season’s runner-up finish.
Davis is just the second Rebel player in program history to earn the title, as Yolanda Moore claimed back-to-back WNBA championships in 1997 and 1998. Along with Davis and Moore, a pair of former Ole Miss head coaches found success coaching in the league as Van Chancellor notched four WNBA titles and Lin Dunn claimed the 2012 championship.
Since becoming Ole Miss’ fifth first round WNBA Draft pick and second under head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin, David has appeared in five games for the Liberty. The McGehee, Arkansas, native strung together her best appearance in the league against the Atlanta Dream, securing four points, two rebounds, a block and an assist on September 29, 2024.
In two seasons as a Rebel, Davis made a mark on the program in just short time to become one of the most electrifying players in the SEC. During the 2023-24 season, Davis recorded 25 games in double-figure scoring and led Ole Miss with an average of 14.6 points per game to earn First Team All-SEC accolades. At the 2024 SEC Tournament, Davis eclipsed the 1,000 career-point threshold and became the 36th player in school history to reach the mark.
Her first year at Ole Miss after transferring from Arkansas, Davis dropped double-figure points in 19 of her 34 game appearances. Davis was also the Rebels’ top scorer seven times throughout the season and averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
