Our Mayor and Commissioners should be answerable to the Citizens of Clarksdale.
We are the one who voted and trusted them to be honorable stewards of our money. And that would be to take care of the city’s urgent and ongoing needs.
For instance: Giving police officers a decent incentive and increase for their jobs of protecting us. Fifteen-dollars an hour and less than the Mayor’s raise of $36,000 a year is shameful.
We could hire more and pay more. In three years we have gone from 50 officers down to 23. The tax base is dwindling. Where, oh where is this extra $300,000 a year for raises coming from? And the city clerk is moving monies around to cover the bills?
I am not against pay raises that are fair and deserving. These are neither.
I invite the public to sign the petitions and come to City Hall Monday, July 12 at 5 p.m. to show your support for our real city needs, not reckless rewards to a few people.
