I saw an article in the Clarion Ledger discussing the Mainstreet Organization. An organization for which I have long advocated Clarksdale belong.
All of the good progressive towns, Tupelo, Laurel and Cleveland are members. The article talked about creating small business and jobs at the average rate per job around $60.00 while Nissan jobs cost approximately $200.00 per job.
I don’t disagree with this; however, I do wonder why the state, cities and counties don’t try these Nissan vehicles since they are produced in Mississippi. I brought up the discussion of purchasing Nissan vehicles during the Luckett Administration and was making some progress with the city, not so good with the county and C.P.W.
Anyway, we are ignoring these opportunities while the town and county dry up.
With proper leadership we perhaps can have some investment from Nissan — right now, this previous progressive town does not have a decent grocery store and no auto dealers.
Our management fee is now close to $350,000 per year. You could hire the best management firm in the country with this kind of money.
The taxpayers must get involved — with new money, I-69 may be completed and we are not ready to take advantage.
