Lee Academy just missed keeping its postseason hopes alive with a 16-14 loss at Carroll Academy Friday night.
Quarterback William Walker scored twice on running plays from less than five yards out for Lee. Tanner Fava made the PATs.
“We were up 7-0 at the half, missed a field goal right before the half to go up 10-0, but our kids played hard against a really physical team in Carroll,” said coach Rick Johnston. “I was really pleased with the effort.”
The Colts did have fumble recoveries.
“We caused some fumbles that they got back on,” Johnston said. “We really didn’t score on our defense. We just turned the ball over a couple of times. I was pleased with the overall effort.”
Johnston credited his team for continuing to fight even though the season has not gone Lee’s way.
“It shows they have great character and big heart,” Johnston said.
Lee concludes the season at 7 p.m. Friday at home against North Delta. The Colts will only be losing seniors Vance Johnson and Gage Russell next year.
“You always want to finish the season with a win so it leaves a good taste in your mouth going into next year,” Johnston said. “North Delta is just 30 miles away and our kids from both sides know each other. I’m sure it will be a highly contested game maybe.”
Johnston said Lee needs to stop North Delta from running the ball.
“I think they’re going to line it up and run it right at us,” he said.
The Colts (1-8, 0-3) are back home this week against North Delta (3-6, 1-2) who won a non-conference game 43-18 against Winona Christian (2-6, 0-2).
