Tunica Academy improved to 2-2 on the season with a 72-46 win at home against Columbus Christian Academy last week.
"It was really a team effort,” said Blue Devils coach Daniel Sousa. “Really, when the scoring came down to it, it came down to a couple of people."
Almonzo Payne and Tommy McIver led Tunica Academy in rushing yards and scored several touchdowns. Jeremiah Clarke also ran for touchdowns.
Quarterback Curt Berry had at least three rushing touchdowns. He also threw two touchdown passes.
"Give credit to the offensive line because without them a lot of that wouldn't have happened,” Sousa said.
Johnathan Loy ran for a touchdown and Owen Sanders caught a touchdown pass.
Payne had an interception and Tunica Academy recovered an onside kick.
"It was one of those wet rainy nights and we were able to get defensive stops," Sousa said.
From watching film, Sousa said he knew the Blue Devils’ best chance to win was by running the ball.
"We went in with that mentality and we stuck to it and it ended up working,” Sousa said.
Tunica Academy hosts Calhoun Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
Delta Academy
Delta Academy snapped a two-game losing streak with a 52-30 win at home Friday against Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Quarterback Ethan Moore had 102 passing yards and 166 rushing yards. He had two rushing touchdowns and another two passing touchdowns. He had two interceptions on defense and ran one back 65 yards for a touchdown.
Matthew Sims had 180 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Gabriel Moore had two touchdowns.
"Defensively, it was just a group effort,” said Raiders coach Wesley Harris. “We made some good stops."
Caden Cote had an interception on defense.
"We've been struggling defensively, so it was good to make some good stops,” Harris said.
The Raiders also gained two senior linemen. Jaylin Clay and Daylin Clay transferred from Madison Shannon Palmer High School.
"They'll be a help to us up front defensively,” Harris said. “We've had trouble stopping the run. Hopefully, the addition of those two guys helps out."
Delta Academy is at West Memphis Christian at 7 p.m. Friday.
Madison Palmer
It was scoreless at halftime, but conditioning caught up with Madison Shannon Palmer High School in the second half.
After having to forfeit two games due to COVID issues, the Dragons (0-4) lost 26-0 at home to Byhalia Friday.
"Second half, our conditioning got us,” said Palmer coach Billy Fields.
Sophomore Semaj Barber had two interceptions for the Dragons. Jamarious Wilson had 10 rushes for 85 yards.
"We're back up and hopefully we can do a better job against O'Bannon this week,” Fields said. “We need game work before we go into conference the following week with Strayhorn."
Both games are on the road the next two Fridays with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
"I just hope we don't get a shutdown,” Fields said. “Every time we get a shutdown, we lose a player."
Fields said two senior linemen Jaylin Clay and Daylin Clay transferred to Delta Academy.
"Losing big bodies, you need all the big bodies you can get especially when you get in shape,” Fields said. “Both of those guys were starters. It hurts me on my O-Line and D-Line but it is what it is. Next man up."
