A question of power and property ownership came up during the Clarksdale Public Utilities board meeting recently.
Luither Mayfield told the board the lights were cut off at 736 Magnolia St. in Clarksdale in his wife’s deceased father’s name early last week. Then CPU general manager Curtis Boschert decided the power should be turned back on, but Mayfield did not want it on.
“There are legal issues for us,” Boschert said. “There are too many questions about it.”
CPU board attorney David Hunt said Mayfield and his family should discuss the matter with their attorney.
“You need to consult your attorney about the ownership interest in that house,” Hunt said.
Boschert said he simply turned the lights back on based on the information he had until the property dispute could be resolved.
In other business:
• CPU approved a $3,500 sponsorship for the upcoming Juke Joint Festival April 15 to 18.
JJF representatives requested $4,500.
“That’s ($3,500) the maximum based on the formula or schedule that the commission has improved in the past,” said Boschert, adding amounts are based on size of festivals and how many people are expected to come to town.
• The board approved spending a little more than $48,000 on a circuit breaker.
“It’s a circuit breaker for the substation,” Boschert said.
“We bought one a year ago. It’s just one of the expenses we need to make on a regular basis to protect the integrity of the system.”
Boschert said breakers are tested regularly and this was the second one purchased in a year and a half.
