Former Mayor of Beulah Arrested for Three Counts of Embezzlement

JACKSON – State Auditor Shad White announced Thursday that Special Agents from his office have arrested Bertha Thomas, the former Mayor of Beulah, on three counts of embezzlement. Thomas is accused of embezzling tax disbursements issued to the town by the Bolivar County Tax Collector.

Clerical error keeps woman in Pike County jail for 14 months

A typo in jail records — a single digit — is one of the factors that kept Dana Lopez in the Pike County jail for more than a year as grand juries met and adjourned and nothing happened with her case.
Had the system not failed Lopez, she more than likely would have been released months ago.
