A more than three hour stand-off involving local and state law enforcement officers at the Grenada Walgreens on Hwy. 8 ended in the death of a local man Sunday night.
According to Grenada Police Department Chief George Douglas, 39-year-old Bradley Hatcher was killed following a stand-off between officers with the GPD and deputies with the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office after he took hostages at the chain pharmacy.
“During the stand-off with Hatcher it was confirmed that he did have a firearm in his possession,” Chief Douglas said. “Contact was made with Hatcher by the police during the situation.”
Local officials were joined by troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team and agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics as the situation, which was first reported at 4:40 p.m., continued on Sunset Drive.
“Law enforcement spoke with Hatcher and determined that hostages were inside the store with him,” Chief Douglas said.
The hostage situation ended at approximately 8:20 p.m. when gunfire was heard.
“The hostage situation resulted in the threat being neutralized by the Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team,” Chief Douglas concluded.
All roads leading to and near Walgreens were blocked and nearby bystanders were asked to vacate the area during the hostage situation. Motorists and residents were also asked to stay clear of the area while law enforcement worked to defuse the situation.
The investigation is being led by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
All hostages were reported safe.
