The Clarksdale Police Department was kept busy Wednesday responding to the theft of an automobile, an assault requiring medical attention and the burglary of a home in Clarksdale.
Police also reported a car chase and a shots fired call with cartridges recovered by officers responding to the scene.
Clarksdale Assistant Chief Vince Ramirez has asked anyone with information about this incident to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or simply dial 911.
All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving a crime.
Auto Grand Larceny
Police responded to what was later deemed a grand larceny after a resident reported her vehicle stolen at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Officers said Chetonya Watkins told officers she was on School Street, but didn't know the address or the time when her vehicle was stolen. Watkins said she had left the keys in the vehicle.
Watkins said she did not see who took her vehicle and only noticed it gone when she went to get back in her vehicle.
The case was assigned to Investigator L. Grimes.
A person convicted of grand larceny faces the following felony penalties:
- If the property is valued at $1,000 or more but less than $5,000, the offender faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The penalty increases to a ten-year felony sentence if the property is stolen from a place of worship.
- If the property is valued at $5,000 or more but less than $25,000, the offender faces a maximum sentence of ten years' imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.
- If the property is valued at $25,000 or more, the offender faces a 20-year maximum prison sentence and a fine of $10,000.
Aggravated Assault
Police were told of an aggravated assault after Shenika Foster came to the Clarksdale Police Department at 10 p.m. Wednesday and reported a relative had been hurt to the point he require medical attention in Memphis.
Police reports said the incident took place in an apartment complex in 1800 block of Espy Drive.
Foster told police her nephew, who she has custody of, was involved in an altercation where the left side of his face was hit with a blunt object and damage was done to his left eye socket. The boy was taken to LeBonheur Hospital in Memphis.
Police reports said a suspect has been identified and the case has been assigned to Investigator G. Johnson.
Aggravated assault is defined as injury or threat to a person to make them fear for their life. It is punishable by up to 20-years in prison and a $10,000 fine. An adult who assaults a juvenile can find the penalty enhanced to 30-years in prison.
Home Burglary
Police were called to the 800 block of Spruce shortly after midnight Tuesday after a resident came home and found her home had been burglarized.
Jasmine Scott told police she came home and found an air conditioner had been pushed in. Scott reported a Play Station 4, a pair of shoes, two bottles of alcohol, an assault rifle and handgun stolen in the incident.
The case was assigned to Investigator G. Johnson.
Anyone convicted of breaking and entering a home or inner door of a dwelling whether armed with a deadly weapon or not, and even if at the time the dwelling house is not occupied, with intent to commit a crime, shall be placed in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for not less than three years nor more than 25 years.
The crime is enhanced if they person has a previous burglary conviction.
Shots Fired
The Clarksdale Police Department has responded to the following reports of shots fired:
· 800 block of Catalpa Street - Officers saw a stolen vehicle in area, gave chase to
vehicle, suspects jumped out of vehicle and ran off.
· West Second and Anderson Blvd - shell casings were recovered.
Police are asking residents to call them immediately when they hear shots fired in their neighborhood, give a location of where the shot came from and police will respond to the scene and check for evidence.
